 <\/p>\n

The Department of Space, through Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), is playing a critical role in supporting agriculture, water resource management, and disaster preparedness using satellite-based data and geospatial technologies. This was stated by Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science & Technology, Earth Sciences, and MoS PMO, in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today.<\/p>\n

Highlighting the use of satellite data for multiple applications, the Minister informed that detailed mapping and monitoring activities have been undertaken across various sectors, particularly in the state of Jharkhand. These include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Agriculture Support<\/strong>:\n
      \n
    • Paddy crop mapping and Kharif sown area estimation<\/li>\n
    • Weekly sowing and harvesting progress reports<\/li>\n
    • Drought monitoring using satellite indicators<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
    • Water Resources Management<\/strong>:\n
        \n
      • Groundwater prospect mapping and recharge plan at 1:50,000 scale across all 24 districts of Jharkhand<\/li>\n
      • Water spread monitoring of over 8,368 waterbodies (larger than 1 hectare)<\/li>\n
      • Wetland mapping at two scales: 1:50,000 (2017\u201318) and 1:12,500 (2018\u201319)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
      • Disaster Management Support<\/strong>:
        \nUnder the Disaster Management Support Programme (DMSP), ISRO provides real-time satellite data and geospatial services to central and state-level disaster management authorities. These include:<\/p>\n
          \n
        • Flood Management<\/strong>:\n
            \n
          • Annual flood inundation maps shared with state nodal departments<\/li>\n
          • Flood hazard zonation atlases using historical satellite data (since 1998) developed for major flood-prone states like Assam, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal, and Andhra Pradesh<\/li>\n
          • Spatial Flood Early Warning Systems (FLEWS) operational for Godavari and Tapi rivers under the National Hydrology Project (Ministry of Jal Shakti), and extended to flood-prone districts in the North Eastern Region<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
          • Landslide Monitoring<\/strong>:\n
              \n
            • A Landslide Atlas of India, covering ~80,000 landslide incidents across 17 states and 2 UTs from 1998\u20132022, developed by NRSC\/ISRO<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
            • Forest Fire Detection<\/strong>:\n
                \n
              • Daily monitoring during the forest fire season (6\u20138 times a day) with inputs shared with Forest Survey of India (FSI), Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC), and state forest departments<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
              • Water Conservation under Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM)<\/strong>:\n
                  \n
                • Groundwater prospects and quality mapping completed at 1:50,000 scale for the entire country<\/li>\n
                • Geospatial data delivered to state departments to help identify groundwater recharge sites<\/li>\n
                • Training provided to over 150 officers in utilizing these maps for field-level planning<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
                • Support to Jal Shakti Abhiyan (JSA)<\/strong>:\n
                    \n
                  • Eight geospatial layers each created for 1240 JSA blocks and made available on ISRO\u2019s Bhuvan-JSA Geoportal<\/li>\n
                  • Around 50 technical training sessions conducted for JSA teams on map usage<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                    The Minister emphasized that these efforts are crucial for data-driven decision-making in managing natural resources, improving agricultural outcomes, and mitigating the impact of natural disasters. The continued collaboration between ISRO and various central and state agencies is enhancing India\u2019s resilience and preparedness in the face of climatic and environmental challenges.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
