A devastating landslide triggered by record-breaking rainfall<\/strong> near the revered Vaishno Devi shrine<\/strong> has claimed the lives of 34 pilgrims<\/strong> and left 23 others injured<\/strong>, as rescue operations entered their second day<\/strong> on Wednesday. With fears of more individuals trapped under debris, rescue teams from the Army, CRPF, J&K Police<\/strong>, and Vaishno Devi Shrine Board<\/strong> personnel continue to dig through the rubble at the site of the tragedy.<\/p>\n

The incident occurred on Tuesday near Inderprastha Bhojnalaya at Ardhkuwari<\/strong>, roughly halfway on the 12-km pilgrimage route from Katra to the Bhawan<\/strong>, the cave shrine dedicated to Goddess Vaishno Devi.<\/p>\n

Four Victims from Punjab Among the Deceased<\/h3>\n

Authorities confirmed that 32 bodies<\/strong> were recovered from the site, while two injured pilgrims succumbed<\/strong> at the hospital. Of the deceased, four were from Punjab<\/strong> \u2014 identified as Raj, Ramsharan, Krishna, and Manpreet<\/strong>. Another victim, Ram Pal<\/strong>, hailed from Haryana, while the rest were from Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Rajasthan<\/strong>, and other parts of the country.<\/p>\n

Pilgrimage Suspended, Katra Deserted<\/h3>\n

The yatra (pilgrimage)<\/strong> has been suspended for a second consecutive day<\/strong>. Initially halted on the Himkoti trek route<\/strong> Tuesday morning, the suspension was extended to the main route<\/strong> later that afternoon due to safety concerns. The Katra base camp<\/strong>, usually bustling with devotees, remained largely deserted<\/strong> as landslides on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway<\/strong> blocked vehicular movement from Jammu.<\/p>\n

PM Modi, LG Manoj Sinha Express Condolences<\/h3>\n

Prime Minister Narendra Modi<\/strong>, in a statement on X (formerly Twitter), said,<\/p>\n

\u201cThe loss of lives due to a landslide on the route to the Mata Vaishno Devi temple is saddening. My thoughts are with the bereaved families. May the injured recover at the earliest. The administration is assisting all those affected. My prayers for everyone’s safety and well-being.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha<\/strong> visited the injured at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Superspeciality Hospital in Katra<\/strong>, where all 23 injured are receiving treatment. He praised emergency workers and assured that the best medical care<\/strong> is being provided.<\/p>\n

\u201cI met devotees injured in the landslide. I urged doctors to ensure best possible treatment. My gratitude to emergency responders, SMVDSB employees and citizens whose intervention saved many lives,\u201d Sinha said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

He also briefed PM Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah<\/strong> about the ongoing situation and confirmed that rescue and relief efforts<\/strong> are underway in various districts.<\/p>\n

Relief Announced for Victims\u2019 Families<\/h3>\n

The administration announced an ex gratia compensation<\/strong> of Rs 9 lakh<\/strong> for the next of kin of each deceased pilgrim \u2014 Rs 5 lakh<\/strong> from the Shrine Board<\/strong> and an additional Rs 4 lakh<\/strong> from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Rail Traffic Hit; 58 Trains Cancelled<\/h3>\n

The deluge has disrupted not just roadways but also rail operations<\/strong>. The Northern Railways<\/strong> cancelled 58 trains<\/strong> to and from Jammu and Katra, while 64 others were short-terminated or short-originated<\/strong> at alternate stations. Train movement resumed briefly on Wednesday morning, only to be halted again due to flash floods<\/strong> and soil erosion<\/strong> near the Chakki river<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
