In the aftermath of devastating rains, landslides, and cloudbursts, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has described the scale of destruction in the state as “much higher” than last year. The CM conducted an aerial survey of the most affected areas, including Bharmour and Manimahesh in Chamba district, and Fatehpur and Mand in Kangra district, where the release of excess water from the Pong Dam has worsened the situation.<\/p>\n

While attempting to land in Bharmour, Sukhu\u2019s helicopter was unable to touch down due to adverse weather conditions. However, he later spoke to the media at Chamba, offering a grim assessment of the situation. “The devastation is widespread, and although preemptive measures by the government have saved lives compared to the catastrophic losses last year, the damage to infrastructure\u2014roads, electricity, water, and communication networks\u2014is far worse,” the Chief Minister stated.<\/p>\n

Sukhu emphasized that the disaster this year had affected the entire state, with incessant rains and subsequent landslides and cloudbursts causing unprecedented destruction. While recognizing the enormity of the challenge, the CM reassured the public that the state government, with the support of local communities, would tackle the crisis head-on. “We will rehabilitate those rendered homeless and those who have lost their livelihoods,” he pledged, announcing a special relief package for the affected families.<\/p>\n

On-the-Ground Action and Leadership<\/strong><\/h3>\n

In response to the crisis, the CM mentioned that key state officials, including Speaker of the Vidhan Sabha Kuldeep Singh Pathania, Revenue Minister Jagat Singh Negi, and Public Works Minister Vikramaditya Singh, were closely monitoring the situation. The government has mobilized personnel and resources, including heavy machinery like JCBs and poclains, to restore road connectivity, which has been severely impacted.<\/p>\n

“Minister Jagat Singh Negi has even walked to Bharmour from Chamba, demonstrating our government\u2019s commitment to addressing this crisis with a human touch,” Sukhu remarked. He also pointed out that the evacuation of stranded individuals would depend on favorable weather conditions, as many roads had been washed away, particularly those leading to Bharmour and other remote areas. However, helicopters have been deployed to assist in airlifting stranded people.<\/p>\n

Government\u2019s Commitment to the People<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The CM criticized the BJP for “spreading rumors” instead of supporting the affected people. He specifically addressed the political criticism regarding the suspension of the Manimahesh Yatra, which was put on hold due to the current weather conditions. “Himachal Pradesh is a land of deities, and we have great respect for our religious practices. Unfortunately, the BJP is playing petty politics at a time when we should be focused on relief efforts,” Sukhu stated.<\/p>\n

A Call for Long-Term Solutions<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Sukhu also highlighted the need for a deeper investigation into the frequent cloudbursts affecting the region. He revealed that in a recent meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, he had asked for the formation of an expert group to study the reasons behind the recurrent weather phenomena. “Global warming and climate change are posing a growing challenge. We need to address these issues urgently to protect both our environment and our people,” the Chief Minister added.<\/p>\n

Ongoing Relief Operations and Community Support<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The CM also visited Kalsuin, where buses were arranged to help stranded pilgrims return home. Over 5,000 devotees were transported to Nurpur and Pathankot on Saturday, and additional buses were being arranged for people coming from Jammu and Kashmir. Efforts to restore the Salooni-Khundimaral road are underway to facilitate smoother travel for the pilgrims.<\/p>\n

Before departing for Bharmour, the Chief Minister also checked on the relief operations in Kangra district at Pathankot Air Force Station. Deputy Commissioner Hemraj Bairwa briefed him on the ongoing rescue work in areas affected by the release of excess water from Pong Dam.<\/p>\n

Public Works Minister Vikramaditya Singh, MLAs Neeraj Nayyar and Suresh Kumar, and other senior district officials were also present at the event, highlighting a coordinated effort across various levels of government to expedite relief and rehabilitation efforts.<\/p>\n

While the state grapples with one of the most devastating natural disasters in recent memory, Chief Minister Sukhu\u2019s leadership has ensured that immediate relief operations are underway. The government’s focus now lies on restoring critical infrastructure, evacuating stranded people, and providing financial and material support to those who have lost everything.
