In a major success for disaster preparedness and infrastructure resilience, the 126 MW Larji Hydropower Project has emerged unscathed from the heavy rains and flood threats that hit the region this monsoon season. The project continued its operations smoothly, thanks to timely preventive measures undertaken by the Himachal Pradesh government and the Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board Limited (HPSEBL).<\/p>\n

Learning from the severe damages of 2023\u2014when the Larji power project suffered a complete shutdown for six months, incurring losses of nearly Rs. 95 crore and requiring an additional Rs. 185 crore for repairs\u2014the state government and HPSEBL prioritized safety and risk mitigation this year.<\/p>\n

Under the direct supervision of Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, a comprehensive safety plan was implemented well ahead of the monsoon season. A key component of this plan was the installation of new flood gates at the project site and its main entry points. These gates effectively prevented the ingress of floodwaters from the swollen Beas river during the peak flooding on August 26, 2025.<\/p>\n

In addition to the flood gates, rapid drainage systems were installed to immediately remove any seepage into the powerhouse, ensuring that operations continued without disruption. The project team also tackled challenges like silt deposition, efficiently executing site-level interventions that maintained safety and operational stability.<\/p>\n

Earlier this year, in February 2025, HPSEBL further bolstered its preparedness by restructuring the Generation Wing, creating new field and technical posts to enhance on-site monitoring and response capabilities. This strategic move played a crucial role in ensuring the readiness and resilience of the Larji project.<\/p>\n

Chief Minister Sukhu praised the HPSEBL management, engineers, and the entire team for their dedication and foresight. \u201cThe protection of the Larji Hydropower Project is a testament to what can be achieved with proactive governance and timely planning. I commend the entire team for their exemplary efforts,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He further directed that the special safety plan should remain in force and continue to evolve in line with emerging climate and environmental challenges.<\/p>\n

The success of this year’s flood management at the Larji project stands as a model for other infrastructure initiatives across the state, highlighting the importance of learning from past disasters and investing in long-term resilience.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
