National Democratic Alliance (NDA) nominee Chandrapuram Ponnusamy Radhakrishnan has been elected as the 17th Vice President of India, defeating opposition INDIA bloc candidate Justice B. Sudershan Reddy in the Vice Presidential election held on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Radhakrishnan secured a clear majority with 452 first preference votes, while Justice Reddy received 300 votes. Fifteen votes were declared invalid, as announced by Rajya Sabha Secretary General P.C. Mody following the counting process.<\/p>\n

The Vice Presidential election witnessed an impressive voter turnout of 98.20%, with 767 Members of Parliament (MPs) casting their ballots out of the total 781 eligible voters. Thirteen MPs abstained from voting, including seven from the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), four from the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), one from the Shiromani Akali Dal, and one Independent MP.<\/p>\n

PM Modi Congratulates Radhakrishnan<\/h4>\n

Following the announcement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his congratulations via a post on X (formerly Twitter), sRadhakrishn \u201cCongratulations to Thiru CP Radhakrishnan Ji on winning the 2025 Vice Presidential election. His life has always been devoted to serving society and empowering the poor and marginalised. I am confident that he will be an outstanding VP, who will strengthen our Constitutional values and enhance Parliamentary discourse.\u201d<\/p>\n

A Veteran Leader with Decades of Public Service<\/h4>\n

C.P. Radhakrishnan, born on October 20, 1957, in Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu, brings with him decades of experience in public life. Prior to his nomination, he was serving as the Governor of Maharashtra since July 2024. His previous gubernatorial responsibilities include terms as Governor of Jharkhand, and he also held additional charge of Telangana and Puducherry.<\/p>\n

A two-time Member of Parliament from Coimbatore, Radhakrishnan’s political journey began with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, before becoming a prominent leader in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He went on to serve as the BJP\u2019s Tamil Nadu state president and held key parliamentary roles, including as Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee.<\/p>\n

Between 2016 and 2020, he chaired the Coir Board under the Ministry of MSME, during which coir exports achieved record highs. From 2020 to 2022, he served as the BJP in-charge for Kerala, further strengthening the party\u2019s organizational base in the state.<\/p>\n

A Multifaceted Personality<\/h4>\n

Radhakrishnan holds a Bachelor\u2019s degree in Business Administration. Apart from politics, he is known for his enthusiasm for sports, especially table tennis, and has maintained a keen interest in cricket and volleyball. He has also represented India on numerous international delegations across Asia, Europe, and North America, promoting Indian values and perspectives globally.<\/p>\n

Vice Presidential Post Vacant Since July<\/h4>\n

The Vice President\u2019s post had been vacant since July 21, following the resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar due to health-related reasons. With his election, Radhakrishnan becomes the 15th individual to hold the office but is counted as the 17th Vice President in terms of succession, owing to repeat terms served by previous VPs.<\/p>\n

Looking Ahead<\/h4>\n

As Vice President of India, Radhakrishnan will also serve as the ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, presiding over the Upper House of Parliament. His wide-ranging political and administrative experience is expected to play a crucial role in maintaining legislative decorum and ensuring the smooth functioning of parliamentary proceedings.<\/p>\n
