The United Nations Children\u2019s Fund (UNICEF) has issued a stark warning about the rapidly deteriorating conditions in Gaza City<\/strong>, where more than 450,000 children<\/strong> are facing imminent danger<\/strong> amid intensifying military operations, famine, and the collapse of vital services.<\/p>\n

In a statement released today, Edouard Beigbeder<\/strong>, UNICEF Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa, described the situation as \u201can impending catastrophe\u201d<\/strong>, emphasizing that children \u2014 already traumatized by nearly two years of war \u2014 are \u201cteetering on the edge of survival.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThe escalating military offensive in Gaza City is having devastating consequences for over 450,000 children,\u201d Beigbeder said. \u201cWith famine confirmed, and critical services collapsing, the urgency to act and save lives has never been greater.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Children Killed, Maimed, and Starving<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The UN agency highlighted that the use of explosive weapons in densely populated areas<\/strong>, including the Zeitoun neighborhood, has led to a surge in civilian casualties, destroyed shelters, and critical infrastructure \u2014 pushing Gaza City toward becoming effectively uninhabitable<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Among the most tragic cases is that of three-year-old Wesam<\/strong>, the sole survivor of a midnight airstrike<\/strong> that killed her entire family, including her pregnant mother and both grandparents. Wesam now lies severely injured in a Gaza City hospital, her leg nearly amputated.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is nowhere safe to go,\u201d Beigbeder added. \u201cChildren like Wesam are the face of this war \u2014 wounded, orphaned, and left in shattered cities with no place to heal.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

UNICEF also confirmed the severity of the hunger crisis, reporting that over 10,000 children<\/strong> have been diagnosed with acute malnutrition<\/strong> in Gaza City in just the last two months. Of these, 2,400 children are being treated for severe acute malnutrition<\/strong> \u2014 a condition that can lead to death if their treatment is interrupted.<\/p>\n

Hospitals, already operating with minimal supplies and electricity, are overwhelmed and failing<\/strong>. Preterm babies in incubators<\/strong>, children in intensive care<\/strong>, and those with disabilities<\/strong> are at grave risk<\/strong>, with medical personnel increasingly unable to protect or evacuate them.<\/p>\n

UNICEF: Gaza’s Children Are Running Out of Time<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The statement underscores the long-term devastation<\/strong> of the nearly two-year war, which has reportedly left over 50,000 children dead or maimed<\/strong> since the escalation began.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow many more are needed before the world acts?\u201d Beigbeder asked. \u201cWe cannot continue to fail them.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

UNICEF Demands Immediate Action from All Parties and Global Leaders<\/strong><\/h3>\n

UNICEF is calling for urgent international action<\/strong>, reiterating its demand for Israel to meet its legal obligations under international humanitarian law<\/strong>, including the protection of children and civilian infrastructure.<\/p>\n

  • Sustained, safe, and unimpeded humanitarian access<\/strong>, using all available crossings to deliver food, medical aid, fuel, and water.<\/li>\n
  • Protection of critical infrastructure<\/strong> including hospitals, shelters, and water systems.<\/li>\n
  • No forced displacement<\/strong> of civilians. Those unable or unwilling to evacuate must be protected where they are.<\/li>\n
  • Safe access for humanitarian organizations and personnel<\/strong> to reach children and families across the Gaza Strip.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    \u201cWe are gravely concerned about the future of Gaza\u2019s children. They need peace, they need food, they need medical care \u2014 but above all, they need protection,\u201d UNICEF stressed.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

    With no end in sight to the hostilities and humanitarian collapse, UNICEF warned that any further intensification of the military campaign in Gaza City will \u201cmultiply children\u2019s suffering exponentially\u201d<\/strong>, effectively tearing away what little remains of their safety and humanity.<\/p>\n
