Romania has confirmed a violation of its airspace by a Russian drone, marking the second such incident involving a NATO member this week. The breach occurred during ongoing Russian airstrikes targeting southern Ukraine and has sparked renewed concerns over the war\u2019s expansion toward NATO\u2019s eastern flank.<\/p>\n

In an official statement released on Saturday, Romania\u2019s Ministry of National Defence said two Romanian F-16 fighter jets were conducting air patrols near the Ukrainian border when the Russian drone was detected. The aircraft were already airborne in response to Russian missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure along the Danube River, near Romania\u2019s southeastern frontier.<\/p>\n

The drone was tracked approximately 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) southwest of Chilia Veche<\/strong>, a remote area close to the Romanian-Ukrainian border. It reportedly vanished from radar shortly afterward, without flying over populated areas or posing an immediate threat to civilians or infrastructure.<\/p>\n

Romanian authorities have not reported damage or casualties but said the incident underscores the increasing proximity of Russia\u2019s military operations to NATO territory. The defence ministry stated that air defense systems remain on high alert and that Romania continues to monitor the situation closely in coordination with NATO partners.<\/p>\n

This incursion follows a similar incident earlier in the week, when Poland shot down at least three Russian drones<\/strong> that had entered its airspace. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk<\/strong> responded on Saturday by announcing heightened air defense readiness and confirming the launch of “preventative operations” involving both Polish and allied NATO aircraft.<\/p>\n

Zelensky: \u201cAn Obvious Expansion of the War\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n
