Chief Minister’s Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has stressed the urgent need to strike a balance between rapid development and environmental protection to ensure a sustainable and secure future for Himachal Pradesh. Reflecting on the disastrous climatic events of 2023 and 2025, the CM emphasized that the lessons learned demand stronger ecological safeguards and greater public participation in conservation efforts.<\/p>\n

Addressing a gathering, CM Sukhu highlighted the growing importance of Village Forest Management Societies (VFMS)<\/strong> in forest conservation and urged them to work hand-in-hand with the Forest Department to curb illegal activities. In recognition of their efforts, the government has announced plans to honour these societies<\/strong>. To address manpower shortages in forest protection, the state is also appointing \u2018Van Mitras\u2019<\/strong>, who will serve as field-level forest guardians.<\/p>\n

Youth Participation Encouraged<\/h3>\n

The Chief Minister called upon the youth to take active roles in environmental preservation, encouraging them to become ambassadors of the green movement. \u201cOur future lies in ensuring a secure, prosperous, and green Himachal for the generations to come,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Himachal\u2019s Vision: India\u2019s First Green Energy State<\/h3>\n

CM Sukhu reaffirmed his government\u2019s commitment to transform Himachal Pradesh into India\u2019s first Green Energy State<\/strong>. A wide array of initiatives have already been rolled out over the past two and a half years, focusing on:<\/p>\n

  • Green energy transition<\/strong><\/li>\n
  • Sustainable waste management<\/strong><\/li>\n
  • Eco-tourism development<\/strong><\/li>\n
  • Promotion of natural farming<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    A key milestone in this journey is the foundation stone laying of North India\u2019s first Green Hydrogen Plant<\/strong> at Dabhota in Nalagarh tehsil of Solan district, a significant step towards alternative clean fuels.<\/p>\n

    Solar Energy Expansion<\/h3>\n

    The state is actively shifting towards solar energy<\/strong> with surveys underway for 325 MW solar power capacity<\/strong>. Already, seven solar projects totaling 72 MW<\/strong> have been allocated to companies in early 2025. The government is also establishing 200 Green Panchayats<\/strong> with solar installations of 200 kW capacity each<\/strong> to decentralize energy solutions at the grassroots level.<\/p>\n

    Promoting Green Mobility & Education<\/h3>\n

    To reduce carbon emissions, the state is building green corridors<\/strong> and promoting electric vehicles (EVs)<\/strong> over traditional combustion-engine vehicles. Initiatives like the Green School Programme<\/strong> are educating students about sustainability from a young age.<\/p>\n

    In another step to reduce plastic usage, the CM announced the distribution of 60,000 stainless steel water bottles<\/strong> to school students to discourage the use of single-use plastic bottles.<\/p>\n

    Strict Action Against Plastic Waste<\/h3>\n

    Plastic use regulations have become increasingly stringent. The state government has entered into agreements with cement plants to co-process non-recyclable plastic waste<\/strong>, ensuring environmentally safe disposal. A major digital step forward is the launch of the \u201cPlastic Challaning Mobile App,\u201d<\/strong> enabling officers from 13 departments<\/strong> to issue digital challans on the spot\u2014eliminating paperwork and enhancing environmental law enforcement.<\/p>\n

    Eco-Villages & Afforestation<\/h3>\n

    In a bid to promote sustainable local development<\/strong>, the government has also issued guidelines for the creation of eco-villages<\/strong>. Furthermore, the state has secured Rs 143.35 crore under the National CAMPA (Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority)<\/strong> for its 2025\u201326 Annual Plan of Operation, focusing on large-scale afforestation efforts.<\/p>\n
