Prime Minister Narendra Modi today inaugurated and laid the foundation stone of development projects worth over Rs 34,200 crore<\/strong> in Bhavnagar<\/strong>, Gujarat, during the \u2018Samudra se Samriddhi\u2019<\/strong> event. Addressing the gathering, PM Modi outlined a bold vision for India’s maritime sector and reiterated the call for a self-reliant nation, stating, \u201cFor peace, stability and prosperity in the world, India must become self-reliant. Whether chips or ships, we must make them in India.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n

\n

India’s Ocean-Led Growth Vision<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Speaking just ahead of the Navratri festivities, the Prime Minister described the event as a celebration of India\u2019s emerging maritime power. He emphasized that 21st-century India now views the oceans as vast avenues of opportunity.<\/p>\n

\u201cIndia\u2019s coastlines will become gateways to national prosperity,\u201d he declared, as he announced the launch and commencement of multiple port-led development initiatives across Gujarat and the nation.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

He also inaugurated the International Cruise Terminal in Mumbai<\/strong>, enhancing cruise tourism and connectivity.<\/p>\n

\n

Historic Reforms to Revive India\u2019s Maritime Legacy<\/strong><\/h3>\n

In a significant announcement, PM Modi declared that large ships have now been granted infrastructure status<\/strong> \u2014 a long-awaited reform that will make shipbuilding in India more viable and globally competitive.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis move will allow shipbuilding companies to access easier and cheaper credit, making Indian firms stronger players in global shipping,\u201d he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

PM Modi revealed that India currently pays nearly $75 billion (approx. \u20b96 lakh crore)<\/strong> annually to foreign shipping companies \u2014 almost equal to the nation\u2019s defense budget. He emphasized that this outflow has cost India millions of potential jobs and economic opportunities over decades.<\/p>\n

\n

Three Major Schemes for Maritime Sector<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The government is working on three major schemes<\/strong> aimed at:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Easing access to finance for shipbuilders<\/li>\n
  2. Enabling technology adoption<\/li>\n
  3. Enhancing quality and design standards<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    These initiatives will see a planned investment of over Rs. 70,000 crore<\/strong> in the coming years.<\/p>\n

    One Nation, One Port, One Document<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    The Prime Minister announced that from today, all major ports will implement the \u2018One Nation, One Document\u2019<\/strong> and \u2018One Nation, One Port\u2019<\/strong> system. This will eliminate redundant paperwork and streamline logistics, reducing turnaround times and boosting ease of doing business.<\/p>\n

    Reviving a Forgotten Maritime Power<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    PM Modi reminded the nation that India once ranked among the world\u2019s top shipbuilding countries. Citing historical precedence, he lamented that misguided policies in the post-independence era shrank India’s share in global shipping trade from 40% to just 5%<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    He emphasized that India has the talent, the industrial strength, and now the political will<\/strong> to rebuild its maritime strength. \u201cThe time has come to reclaim our maritime legacy,\u201d he declared.<\/p>\n

    Skill Development and Job Creation<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    PM Modi underlined the role of ITIs and the Indian Maritime University<\/strong> in building a skilled workforce for the maritime economy. He shared that over 3 lakh Indian seafarers<\/strong> are now employed globally, making India one of the top 3 suppliers of trained maritime personnel.<\/p>\n

    He also highlighted the Alang Ship Breaking Yard<\/strong> as a thriving example of employment generation in the sector, calling it a model for others.<\/p>\n

    \n

    Economic Multiplier of Shipbuilding<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Calling shipbuilding the “Mother of All Industries”<\/strong>, PM Modi shared that each rupee invested in the sector returns nearly double<\/strong> the economic output. Moreover, every 100 shipyard jobs<\/strong> can generate over 600 allied jobs<\/strong> in sectors like steel, IT, electronics, and textiles.<\/p>\n

    \n

    Maritime Heritage and Modernization<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    To preserve India\u2019s rich maritime history, a world-class maritime museum<\/strong> is under construction at Lothal<\/strong>, which PM Modi said would become a symbol of national pride, akin to the Statue of Unity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    Port-Led Development: Gujarat Leading the Way<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Gujarat continues to play a pivotal role, handling 40% of India\u2019s sea cargo<\/strong>, with upcoming connectivity via the Dedicated Freight Corridor<\/strong> further enhancing efficiency.<\/p>\n

    PM Modi also announced that the Vadhavan Port in Maharashtra<\/strong>, being built at a cost of over Rs. 75,000 crore<\/strong>, will soon be among the world\u2019s top 10 ports. India\u2019s first deep-water container trans-shipment port<\/strong> has also begun operations in Kerala<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    Self-Reliance: The Path to a Developed India<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    The Prime Minister concluded with a strong call for Atmanirbhar Bharat<\/strong> (Self-Reliant India), urging citizens to:<\/p>\n

    \u201cBuy only Indian-made products. Sell only Indian-made goods. Say with pride \u2014 this is Swadeshi.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

    He called on shopkeepers to display this message in their stores and said that every festival should be a celebration of India\u2019s prosperity.<\/p>\n
