In a significant step towards bolstering maritime cooperation in the Indian Ocean Region, the Indian Navy\u2019s First Training Squadron (1TS)<\/strong> concluded a successful four-day port visit to Maputo, Mozambique<\/strong>, from 16 to 19 September 2025<\/strong>. The visit, involving INS Tir, INS Shardul, INS Sujata<\/strong>, and ICGS Sarathi<\/strong>, showcased India\u2019s growing defence ties with Mozambique and reinforced the country\u2019s broader MAHASAGAR<\/strong> maritime vision.<\/p>\n

Strengthening Operational Interoperability<\/h3>\n

During the deployment, 1TS and the Mozambique Navy<\/strong> conducted a series of joint training exercises<\/strong> aimed at enhancing operational coordination and mutual understanding. These included:<\/p>\n

  • Joint Diving Operations<\/strong><\/li>\n
  • Firefighting and Damage Control Drills<\/strong><\/li>\n
  • Visit, Board, Search, and Seizure (VBSS) Exercises<\/strong><\/li>\n
  • Bridge and Machinery Control Integration Drills<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Indian Navy trainees also undertook cross-training visits to key Mozambican defence institutions, including the Marine Commando School at Katembe<\/strong>, Sargent School at Boane<\/strong>, and the Army Practising School at Manhica<\/strong>. These exchanges fostered greater inter-service cooperation and shared learning experiences.<\/p>\n

    In addition, Mozambique Navy personnel embarked as sea riders<\/strong> aboard the Indian ships for joint surveillance of Mozambique\u2019s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ)<\/strong>, further enhancing regional maritime security collaboration.<\/p>\n

    High-Level Engagements Cement Defence Relations<\/h3>\n

    Senior Officer of 1TS, Captain Tijo K Joseph<\/strong>, along with Commanding Officers of the visiting ships, held courtesy calls with several top-ranking Mozambican defence officials:<\/p>\n

      • Over 1,000 school children<\/strong> from Maputo visited the Indian Navy ships, gaining firsthand exposure to naval operations and maritime technology.<\/li>\n
      • A medical outreach camp<\/strong> was conducted at Naval Headquarters Mozambique<\/strong> and a local hospital in Maputo, providing care to over 100 patients<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
      • Health awareness sessions were organized on critical disease prevention, emergency medical response, and first aid<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
