The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India, has taken suo motu<\/em> cognizance of a tragic incident in North West Delhi\u2019s Ashok Vihar area, where one sanitation worker died and three others sustained serious injuries while cleaning a sewer on 16th September 2025. The Commission’s action follows a media report published on 18th September, which highlighted the hazardous and unsafe working conditions that led to the incident.<\/p>\n

According to the report, the victims were employed by a private construction company and were allegedly sent into the sewer without any safety equipment or protective gear \u2014 a blatant violation of safety norms and human rights. Eyewitness accounts from co-workers claim that no precautions were taken before the workers were made to enter the hazardous environment.<\/p>\n

Responding to the alarming details, the NHRC has issued formal notices to the Chief Secretary of the Government of the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi, the Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation, and the Police Commissioner. The Commission has sought a detailed report on the incident within two weeks. The report is expected to include the following:<\/p>\n

  • Current medical condition of the three injured workers<\/li>\n

    The NHRC expressed grave concern over the repeated occurrence of such preventable tragedies, despite clear directives issued by the Supreme Court of India and NHRC\u2019s own advisories to all States and Union Territories regarding the protection and safety of sanitation workers. \u201cThe contents of the media report, if true, raise a serious issue of human rights violation,\u201d the Commission noted in a statement.<\/p>\n

    According to the Delhi Police, a call was received by the Police Control Room on the night of 16th September regarding the incident. All four victims were immediately rushed to Deen Dayal Upadhyay (DDU) Hospital. Tragically, one worker was declared \u201cbrought dead\u201d upon arrival, while the other three were admitted to the ICU in critical condition.<\/p>\n

    Police authorities have initiated an inquiry, and the manager of the private company responsible for deploying the workers is currently under questioning.<\/p>\n

    The NHRC\u2019s intervention underscores the urgent need for strict enforcement of labor and safety regulations, particularly for sanitation workers who continue to operate under life-threatening conditions despite existing laws and judicial guidelines.<\/p>\n
