In a move aimed at ensuring excellence and transparency in international sports representation, the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports<\/strong> has issued comprehensive Selection Criteria<\/strong> for the participation of individuals and teams in the Asian Games 2026<\/strong> and other major multi-sports events.<\/p>\n

This policy framework is designed to ensure that only athletes and teams with a realistic chance of winning medals<\/strong> represent India at prestigious platforms such as the Asian Games<\/strong>, Para Asian Games<\/strong>, Commonwealth Games<\/strong>, Asian Indoor Games<\/strong>, Asian Beach Games<\/strong>, Youth Olympics<\/strong>, Asian Youth Games<\/strong>, and Commonwealth Youth Games<\/strong>. The criteria, however, do not apply to the Olympic Games<\/strong> and other events where participation is governed by qualification norms of respective international sports federations.<\/p>\n

Key Highlights of the Selection Criteria<\/strong><\/h3>\n

For Measurable Individual Sports<\/strong><\/h4>\n
    \n
  • Athletes must have equaled or surpassed the 6th-place performance<\/strong> from the last Asian Games.<\/li>\n
  • The performance must be achieved at a recognized international event<\/strong> held within 12 months<\/strong> preceding the upcoming Asian Games.<\/li>\n
  • If the event was not part of the last Asian Games, Senior Asian Championships<\/strong> results within the same timeframe will be considered.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    For Non-Measurable Individual Sports<\/strong><\/h4>\n
      \n
    • Athletes must have:\n
        \n
      • Achieved a top 6 finish<\/strong> in the most recent Senior Asian Championships<\/strong> within 12 months, or;<\/li>\n
      • Be ranked among the top 6 Asian athletes<\/strong> in the official international rankings<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
      • In the absence of recent Asian Championships or regular rankings, athletes must prove top 6 performance among Asian competitors<\/strong> in an equivalent international event.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        For Team Sports and Team Events<\/strong><\/h4>\n
          \n
        • Teams must have:\n
            \n
          • Finished within the top 8<\/strong> at the last Senior Asian Championships<\/strong> held within 12 months, or;<\/li>\n
          • Be among the top 8 Asian teams<\/strong> in the latest international rankings<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
          • If neither exists, then a top 8 finish among Asian nations<\/strong> in a comparable international competition will be required.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

            Oversight, Accountability, and Exceptions<\/strong><\/h3>\n

            To maintain integrity in the selection process:<\/p>\n

              \n
            • The Ministry reserves the right<\/strong> to reject recommendations<\/strong> from National Sports Federations (NSFs) if participation is not aligned with India\u2019s goal of sporting excellence.<\/li>\n
            • Recommendations may also be rejected<\/strong> if Asian Championships<\/strong> are found to be irregular or strategically timed to manipulate athlete eligibility<\/strong>, especially where top-level competition is absent<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
            • The criteria contain a relaxation clause<\/strong> permitting the Ministry to include athletes or teams under exceptional circumstances<\/strong>, based on expert advice or recommendations from the Sports Authority of India (SAI)<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

              Strict Control on Delegation Composition<\/strong><\/h3>\n
                \n
              • Only those athletes, coaches, and support staff who are cleared at government cost<\/strong> will form part of the official Indian contingent<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
              • No additional personnel will be allowed, even at no cost to the government<\/strong>, reinforcing a policy of focused and performance-driven representation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
