After achieving significant progress in the education sector, the Himachal Pradesh government under the leadership of Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu is now charting an ambitious course to transform the State\u2019s healthcare landscape. With a vision to deliver world-class healthcare services right at the citizens\u2019 doorsteps, the government has announced a series of comprehensive reforms and technology upgrades across the health sector.<\/p>\n

A landmark achievement in this direction is the introduction of robotic surgery<\/strong> \u2014 a first for government medical institutions in the State \u2014 at the Atal Institute of Medical Super-Specialty, Chamiyana (Shimla)<\/strong> and Dr. Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College, Tanda<\/strong>. This cutting-edge medical technology will soon be extended in phases to government medical colleges in Hamirpur, Chamba, Ner Chowk, and Nahan<\/strong>, enhancing surgical precision and expanding the scope of specialized treatments available locally.<\/p>\n

\u201cSoon after assuming office, the government prioritized strengthening health services with a focus on modernization, skilled manpower, and patient-centric care,\u201d said a government spokesperson today. \u201cOur objective is clear \u2014 no Himachali should have to leave the State for specialized medical care.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition to technological upgrades, the government has undertaken a major structural reform by bifurcating the unified cadre of 3020 Medical Officers<\/strong>. Under the new structure:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • 2337 posts<\/strong> will now be classified as Medical Officers (General)<\/strong>, requiring an MBBS degree<\/strong> and focusing on OPD, IPD, and preventive care<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  • 683 posts<\/strong> have been carved out for Medical Officers (Specialists)<\/strong>, requiring an MBBS with a postgraduate degree\/diploma<\/strong>, to provide expert clinical services across various specialties.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    This bifurcation is seen as a strategic move to align the healthcare workforce with emerging medical needs<\/strong>, enabling better distribution of resources and enhanced delivery of specialized services.<\/p>\n

    To address the chronic shortage of medical staff<\/strong>, the government has further approved:<\/p>\n

      \n
    • Recruitment of 200 Medical Officers as Job Trainees<\/strong>,<\/li>\n
    • 38 Assistant Professors<\/strong> in various super-specialty departments, and<\/li>\n
    • 400 Staff Nurses as Job Trainees<\/strong> across the State\u2019s health institutions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      These appointments are expected to bolster staffing in both medical colleges and hospitals, especially in rural and underserved areas, ensuring equitable access to quality healthcare<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

      The government is also investing in technological upgradation of zonal, regional, and civil hospitals<\/strong>, bringing modern diagnostic and treatment facilities to every corner of the State.<\/p>\n

      \u201cThese reforms mark a turning point in the State\u2019s healthcare journey,\u201d the spokesperson added. \u201cWe are committed to making affordable, advanced, and accessible healthcare<\/strong> a reality for every citizen of Himachal Pradesh. With robotic surgery, specialized medical cadres, and a strengthened workforce, the State is poised to emerge as a model in public healthcare delivery.\u201d<\/p>\n
