The tragic stampede that occurred during a welfare distribution event in Karur has claimed 40 lives, with one more victim succumbing to injuries at the government hospital on Sunday, officials confirmed.<\/p>\n

The incident, which occurred at an event reportedly attended by actor and politician Vijay, has sparked widespread outrage and calls for an impartial probe into the circumstances leading to the deadly crowd surge. The deceased include 17 women, 13 men, four male children, and five female children, as per Tamil Nadu Health Secretary P. Senthil Kumar.<\/p>\n

The victims were among an overwhelming crowd of around 27,000 people\u2014far exceeding the expected turnout of 10,000\u2014who had gathered to catch a glimpse of Vijay and participate in the welfare activity. Tamil Nadu Director General of Police (DGP) G. Venkataraman stated that the crowd had been waiting under extreme heat, with inadequate food and water arrangements, which may have contributed to the chaos.<\/p>\n

Relief Measures Announced<\/h3>\n

In response to the tragedy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh each for the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured, from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF).<\/p>\n

Actor Vijay, who has been at the center of the event, expressed deep sorrow over the incident. He announced a personal compensation of Rs. 20 lakh to be distributed among the families of those who lost their lives and Rs. 2 lakh for each of the injured.<\/p>\n

Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, who cut short his overseas trip, rushed to Karur to pay homage to the deceased and visit those undergoing treatment. He was accompanied by Health Minister Ma Subramanian and other cabinet colleagues. Udhayanidhi assured that a thorough investigation would be carried out.<\/p>\n

He confirmed that a Commission headed by retired judge Aruna Jagadeesan would reach Karur later in the day to begin an independent probe into the incident. “Chief Minister M.K. Stalin will take appropriate action based on the commission\u2019s findings,” he said.<\/p>\n

Call for Independent Inquiry<\/h3>\n

Meanwhile, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), Vijay\u2019s political outfit, has moved the Madras High Court Bench in Madurai, seeking an impartial investigation into the incident. TVK Deputy General Secretary Nirmal Kumar stopped short of alleging a conspiracy but said the party sought a fair and independent inquiry into the tragic event.<\/p>\n

“The judge has agreed to hear the case tomorrow at 2:15 p.m. We will release our official statement following the hearing,” Nirmal Kumar told reporters.<\/p>\n

Public Outcry and Political Repercussions<\/h3>\n

The stampede has triggered a wave of grief and anger across the state, with many questioning the planning and crowd control measures in place during the event. Political parties and civil society organisations have demanded accountability and safety assurances for future public gatherings.<\/p>\n
