In a major stride toward India\u2019s clean energy transition, Coal India Limited (CIL)<\/strong> and the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras)<\/strong> have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish the \u201cCentre for Sustainable Energy\u201d<\/strong> at IIT Madras. The agreement, signed today in the presence of senior leadership from both institutions, underscores a shared vision to transform India\u2019s energy landscape through indigenous innovation and advanced research.<\/p>\n

The MoU was formally signed by\u00a0Achyut Ghatak<\/strong>, Director (Technical), CIL, and Prof. V. Kamakoti<\/strong>, Director, IIT Madras, in the presence of\u00a0P.M. Prasad<\/strong>, Chairman of Coal India, along with senior officials from both organizations.<\/p>\n

A New Chapter in Energy Innovation<\/h3>\n

The Centre for Sustainable Energy will serve as a national hub for cutting-edge research, technology development, and capacity building<\/strong> in sustainable energy. The initiative is aligned with CIL\u2019s broader strategy to diversify beyond coal and lead India\u2019s transition to a low-carbon, energy-secure future<\/strong>, in support of the nation\u2019s Net Zero goals by 2070<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Backed by CIL\u2019s funding, the Centre will focus on:<\/p>\n

  • Repurposing abandoned or underutilized coal mines<\/strong> for sustainable applications<\/li>\n
  • Developing low-carbon energy technologies<\/strong> tailored to Indian conditions<\/li>\n
  • Transforming coal<\/strong> into a valuable feedstock for clean energy applications<\/strong><\/li>\n
  • Enabling scalable innovations<\/strong> that align with India\u2019s economic and environmental priorities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
