In a landmark appeal, United Nations agencies have issued a joint call to strengthen policy and investment in child and youth mental health and well-being<\/strong>, warning that the absence of dedicated global commitments risks deepening an already critical public health and human rights challenge.<\/p>\n

Despite growing global attention to mental health, no UN resolution has yet centered specifically on the mental health of children and young people<\/strong>. The statement, supported by agencies including UNESCO, UNICEF, the World Health Organization (WHO), and the UN Youth Office<\/strong>, urges the international community to elevate child and youth mental health as a standalone global policy and investment priority<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Why It Matters<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Mental health is increasingly recognized across the UN system as a fundamental human right<\/strong>, but children and adolescents remain overlooked in most global frameworks. The lack of coordinated policy has led to fragmented services, chronic underinvestment<\/strong>, and missed opportunities for prevention and early intervention.<\/p>\n

Globally, 1 in 7 adolescents aged 10\u201319 years<\/strong> \u2014 or around 14.3%<\/strong> \u2014 experience a mental health condition, yet most remain undiagnosed and untreated<\/strong>. Suicide has also become one of the leading causes of death among young people aged 10 to 24<\/strong> in many countries.<\/p>\n

      3. Support national strategies and policies<\/strong>
        \nEncourage governments to adopt national child and adolescent mental health strategies<\/strong> aligned with the WHO Comprehensive Mental Health Action Plan<\/strong> and the UNICEF-WHO Joint Programme on Mental Health and Psychosocial Well-being<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
      4. Ensure youth participation and leadership<\/strong>
        \nEmbed young people in every stage of policy design and implementation, recognizing them as partners, not passive beneficiaries<\/strong>, and using existing UN youth engagement frameworks as models.<\/li>\n
      5. Invest in prevention and early intervention<\/strong>
        \nAdopt a whole-of-society approach<\/strong>, linking community, school, digital, and cultural initiatives to create supportive environments<\/strong> for children and youth to thrive.<\/li>\n
      6. Integrate mental health into global monitoring<\/strong>
        \nInclude mental health indicators<\/strong> in household surveys such as the Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys (MICS)<\/strong> and national information systems to strengthen accountability and visibility.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        The UN agencies underscored that addressing mental health among young people is not only a development or health issue but a human rights obligation<\/strong>. They cited the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR)<\/strong> and UNESCO\u2019s 2023 Recommendation on Education for Peace, Human Rights and Sustainable Development<\/strong>, which highlights safe and inclusive learning environments<\/strong> as key to overall well-being.<\/p>\n
