The death toll in the Red Fort car blast<\/strong> rose to 13<\/strong> on Tuesday, a day after a powerful explosion ripped through a vehicle near the historic monument in the national capital. Preliminary investigations have identified Dr. Umar Nabi<\/strong>, a medical practitioner from Pulwama, Jammu and Kashmir<\/strong>, as the likely sole occupant and suspected perpetrator<\/strong> of the blast, senior government officials confirmed.<\/p>\n

The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA)<\/strong> has handed over the investigation to the National Investigation Agency (NIA)<\/strong> amid growing indications of an organized terror network involving multiple individuals, including medical professionals, across Delhi-NCR and Jammu & Kashmir.<\/p>\n

\n

Suspect Identified as Pulwama Doctor<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Dr. Umar Nabi, a general medicine specialist<\/strong> and faculty member at Al-Falah University in Faridabad<\/strong>, was reportedly killed in the explosion. Officials said that the intensity of the blast was such that no identifiable body parts<\/strong> were recovered from the charred remains of the Hyundai i20 car. The J&K Police<\/strong> have collected DNA samples from Dr. Nabi\u2019s family<\/strong> to confirm his identity through forensic analysis.<\/p>\n

According to his family, Dr. Nabi had moved to Delhi in March 2024<\/strong> after completing his studies at Government Medical College, Srinagar<\/strong>, where he was a topper.<\/p>\n

A senior government source said, \u201cThe suspect was under immense pressure after multiple police raids and arrests of his associates. The evidence suggests that the bomb detonated prematurely<\/strong>, which limited the damage.\u201d<\/p>\n

Raids and Arrests Pushed Suspect to Act Hastily<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Officials revealed that the suspect may have acted earlier than planned<\/strong> due to ongoing raids by Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh Police<\/strong>, which led to the arrest of eight individuals<\/strong>, including three doctors<\/strong> connected to Al-Falah University.<\/p>\n

The arrested doctors were identified as:<\/p>\n

  • Dr. Muzamil Ahmad Ganaie (32)<\/strong>, alias Musaib<\/em>, from Pulwama, arrested in Faridabad on October 30<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  • Dr. Shaheen (40)<\/strong>, a resident of Lucknow<\/strong>, arrested on November 8<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  • Dr. Adeel<\/strong>, from Wanpora, Kulgam<\/strong>, apprehended in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh<\/strong>, on November 5<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Police said these arrests, which were made public on November 10, led to the recovery of 2,900 kg of explosives<\/strong>, weapons<\/strong>, timers<\/strong>, and metal fragments<\/strong> from multiple locations.<\/p>\n

    Sequence of Events Before the Blast<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    CCTV footage accessed by investigators shows the suspect\u2019s Hyundai i20 (HR 26CE 7674)<\/strong> entering Delhi from Faridabad via the Badarpur toll plaza at 7:04 a.m.<\/strong> on November 10. The driver, wearing a black mask<\/strong>, can be seen paying cash at the toll booth.<\/p>\n

    Officials said that after spending several hours driving around Delhi, the car entered a parking lot near Red Fort at 3:15 p.m.<\/strong> and remained there for over three hours. The vehicle left at 6:48 p.m.<\/strong>, and the explosion occurred at 6:52 p.m.<\/strong> as the car slowed near a traffic signal.<\/p>\n

    Sources stated that the bomb, although \u201cpowerful,\u201d did not fully detonate<\/strong>. \u201cThere was no crater formation, and no shrapnel was found, indicating that the device exploded prematurely,\u201d a senior officer said.<\/p>\n

    Was It a Suicide Attack?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    While authorities have not ruled out the possibility of a suicide mission<\/strong>, officials said it was too early to draw conclusions<\/strong>.
    \n\u201cIf it were a deliberate suicide attack, the suspect would have driven the car into a high-value or crowded target to cause maximum casualties. The circumstances suggest panic and haste rather than planned execution,\u201d an officer from the central agency said.<\/p>\n

    Faridabad Police and Al-Falah University Under Scrutiny<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    The Faridabad Police<\/strong> confirmed that they had assisted J&K police in Dr. Ganaie\u2019s arrest but claimed they had no prior information<\/strong> about Dr. Nabi\u2019s location or involvement.
    \n\u201cAfter Dr. Muzamil\u2019s arrest, the J&K Police shared leads about potential associates. Raids conducted on November 8 led to the recovery of a large cache of explosives,\u201d a police spokesperson said.<\/p>\n

    Investigators have also begun questioning faculty and administrative staff<\/strong> at Al-Falah University<\/strong>, a private institution established in 2014<\/strong>, to determine whether they were aware of the alleged activities of the arrested doctors.<\/p>\n

    Following the handover of the case, NIA teams<\/strong> along with Delhi Police\u2019s Special Cell<\/strong> and state police forces<\/strong> have launched coordinated raids across Delhi, Faridabad, and Pulwama<\/strong>.
