Global efforts to combat tuberculosis (TB)<\/strong>\u2014one of the world\u2019s deadliest infectious diseases\u2014are facing alarming setbacks due to stagnating funding and widening inequities in access to care, according to the WHO Global Tuberculosis Report 2025<\/strong>, released today.<\/p>\n

Despite substantial gains in testing, treatment, and innovation, TB continues to claim over 1.2 million lives annually<\/strong> and affected an estimated 10.7 million people<\/strong> last year. WHO warns that unless governments and donors urgently strengthen investments, decades of progress could unravel.<\/p>\n

\u201cDeclines in the global burden of TB, and progress in testing, treatment, social protection and research are all welcome news after years of setbacks, but progress is not victory<\/em>,\u201d said Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus<\/strong>, WHO Director-General. \u201cThe fact that TB continues to claim over a million lives each year, despite being preventable and curable, is simply unconscionable.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

\n

Encouraging Global Declines Mask Growing Risks<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Between 2023 and 2024<\/strong>, the number of people falling ill with TB fell by nearly 2%<\/strong>, and TB deaths declined by 3%<\/strong>, reflecting recovery of health systems following COVID-19 disruptions.<\/p>\n

Some regions have shown outstanding progress.<\/p>\n

    \n
  • The WHO African Region<\/strong> recorded a 28% reduction in TB incidence<\/strong> and a 46% reduction in deaths<\/strong> since 2015.<\/li>\n
  • The European Region<\/strong> achieved even greater declines, with incidence dropping 39%<\/strong> and deaths 49%<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  • Over 100 countries<\/strong> reached at least a 20% reduction<\/strong> in TB incidence, and 65 countries<\/strong> cut TB deaths by more than 35%<\/strong>, meeting the first WHO End TB Strategy milestones.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    But the gains are uneven. In 2024, 87%<\/strong> of all TB cases occurred in 30 high-burden countries<\/strong>. Just eight countries<\/strong> accounted for 67%<\/strong> of global cases\u2014India, Indonesia, the Philippines, China, Pakistan, Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Bangladesh.<\/p>\n

    \n

    Advances in Treatment and Diagnosis<\/strong><\/h2>\n

    TB care continues to improve globally:<\/p>\n

      \n
    • 8.3 million<\/strong> people were newly diagnosed and treated in 2024\u201478%<\/strong> of all new cases.<\/li>\n
    • Rapid testing coverage increased from 48% (2023)<\/strong> to 54% (2024)<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
    • Treatment success for drug-sensitive TB remained strong at 88%<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
    • Drug-resistant TB cases declined, with 164,000 people<\/strong> receiving treatment, and treatment success rose to 71%<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
    • Preventive treatment reached 5.3 million<\/strong> at-risk individuals, up from 4.7 million<\/strong> in 2023.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Social Protection: A Missing Link in TB Prevention<\/strong><\/h2>\n

      For the first time, WHO assessed progress toward social protection targets. Among 30 high-burden countries, coverage shows stark disparities\u2014from 3.1% in Uganda<\/strong> to 94% in Mongolia<\/strong>. Nineteen countries reported less than 50% coverage<\/strong>, exposing millions to risks linked to poverty, undernutrition, HIV, diabetes, smoking, and alcohol use.<\/p>\n

      WHO stresses that confronting TB effectively requires multisectoral action<\/strong>, particularly in addressing income insecurity, food access, and social vulnerabilities.<\/p>\n

      \n

      Stagnant Funding Puts Millions at Risk<\/strong><\/h2>\n

      A major threat to global TB progress is chronic underfunding. Only US$5.9 billion<\/strong> was available in 2024 for prevention, diagnosis, and treatment\u2014barely one-quarter<\/strong> of the US$22 billion<\/strong> annual target for 2027.<\/p>\n

      International donor cuts beginning in 2025 have sparked urgent concerns. Models predict that prolonged reductions could cause an additional 2 million deaths<\/strong> and 10 million new TB cases<\/strong> between 2025 and 2035.<\/p>\n

      Research funding is also lagging. In 2023, investment reached US$1.2 billion<\/strong>, just 24%<\/strong> of the target. Yet innovation continues:<\/p>\n

        \n
      • 63 diagnostic tests<\/strong> are currently in development.<\/li>\n
      • 29 TB drugs<\/strong> are in clinical trials\u2014up from 8 in 2015.<\/li>\n
      • 18 vaccine candidates<\/strong> are being tested, including six in Phase 3<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        WHO\u2019s TB Vaccine Accelerator Council<\/strong> remains at the forefront of global vaccine development efforts.<\/p>\n

        \n

        A Pivotal Moment in the Fight Against TB<\/strong><\/h2>\n

        \u201cWe are at a defining moment,\u201d said Dr. Tereza Kasaeva<\/strong>, Director of WHO\u2019s Department for HIV, TB, Hepatitis and STIs. \u201cFunding cuts and persistent drivers of the epidemic threaten to undo hard-won gains, but with political commitment, sustained investment, and global solidarity, we can turn the tide and end this ancient killer once and for all.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

        WHO is calling for:<\/p>\n

          \n
        • Increased domestic investment<\/strong> in TB programmes<\/li>\n
        • Sustained political commitment<\/strong> at national and global levels<\/li>\n
        • Accelerated research and innovation<\/strong><\/li>\n
        • Stronger social protection systems<\/strong><\/li>\n
        • Multisectoral action<\/strong> to address the root causes of vulnerability<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
