Senior Congress leader and former Union Minister Shivraj Patil Chakurkar<\/strong>, one of the longest-serving parliamentarians in India\u2019s political history, passed away on Friday, December 12, 2025, in Latur after a brief illness. He was 90<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

A towering figure in Indian politics for over five decades<\/strong>, Patil held several key positions in the Central government’s and the legislative framework, including serving as the 10th Speaker of the Lok Sabha (1991\u20131996)<\/strong>. He was widely regarded for modernising parliamentary functioning, especially through the introduction of new technologies for information dissemination, broadcasting of parliamentary proceedings, and overseeing the construction of the Parliament Library Building<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

A Distinguished Political Journey<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Born in 1935<\/strong> in the Chakur region of Latur, Shivraj Patil began his political journey in local governance with the Latur Municipal Corporation in 1967<\/strong>. His rise in state politics continued when he was elected as an MLA from Latur in 1972<\/strong>, followed by a second term in 1978<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
