A Special CBI Court in Lucknow has sentenced two former public functionaries to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) each in connection with a major fraud under the Sampurna Grameen Rozgar Yojana (SGRY), involving a wrongful loss of over Rs. 1 crore to the government exchequer.<\/p>\n

The convicted persons are Satya Narayan Prasad Patel, the then Village Pradhan, and Shahnawaj Alam, the then Fair Price Shopkeeper (Kotedar). In addition to the prison sentence, the court imposed a total fine of Rs. 55,000 on the two convicts.<\/p>\n

According to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the case was originally registered on October 31, 2008, after the agency took over Case Crime No. 34\/2006 of Police Station Narhi in Ballia district. The case involved large-scale irregularities in the implementation of the SGRY scheme, which was aimed at providing wage employment in rural areas.<\/p>\n

The investigation revealed that as many as 172 accused persons were initially named for allegedly causing a wrongful loss of Rs. 65 lakh in cash and misappropriation of food grains worth Rs. 45.26 lakh, resulting in a corresponding illegal gain to themselves. The fraud was allegedly carried out through cheating, manipulation of records, and preparation of forged documents under the SGRY scheme.<\/p>\n

After completing the investigation, the CBI filed a chargesheet on November 10, 2010, against three accused: Satyendra Singh Gangwar, the then Chief Finance and Accounts Officer of the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA), Ballia; Satya Narayan Prasad Patel, the then Village Pradhan; and Shahnawaj Alam, the then Fair Price Shopkeeper.<\/p>\n

Following a detailed trial, the Special CBI Court found Patel and Alam guilty of the charges and awarded them rigorous imprisonment for 10 years along with monetary penalties. However, the court acquitted Satyendra Singh Gangwar of all charges, granting him the benefit of doubt.<\/p>\n

The verdict marks a significant development in a long-pending case and underscores the CBI\u2019s continued efforts to bring those involved in corruption and financial irregularities in public welfare schemes to justice.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
