Chhoti Kashi Mandi fondly remembered late Hemkant Katyayan\u2014eminent journalist, educationist, litterateur and art connoisseur of Himachal Pradesh\u2014on his 83rd birth anniversary with a dignified award ceremony titled \u201cAdaranjali 2.0\u201d. The event was organised on Thursday at the auditorium of Saraswati Vidya Mandir, Mandi, by the Late Hemkant Katyayan Memorial Trust.<\/p>\n

Former Deputy Commissioner of Mandi and current Director General of the Food and Agriculture Council of India, Tarun Sridhar, graced the occasion as chief guest. Apoorv Devgan, Deputy Commissioner, Mandi, and Virender Bhatt Sharma, Mayor of the Mandi Municipal Corporation, were present as special guests.<\/p>\n

On the occasion, the Late Hemkant Katyayan Memorial Awards were conferred upon four distinguished personalities for their outstanding contributions in the fields of journalism, literature and music.<\/p>\n

Renowned senior journalist Krishan Bhanu was honoured for his inspirational role in journalism, KK Nutan received the award for his contribution to literature, while Piyush Swami, founder of Sangeet Sadan, Mandi, was honoured posthumously for his valuable services to music and art. The award was received by his disciple and present Director of Sangeet Sadan, Umesh Bhardwaj. Umesh Bhardwaj was also honoured for his valuable services to music and art.<\/p>\n

Addressing the gathering, Tarun Sridhar said that Mandi holds a special place in his heart and has a unique magnetic charm that repeatedly draws him back. He remarked that even when he visits as a guest, he considers himself a resident of Mandi. Recalling his tenure as Deputy Commissioner, he described Hemkant Katyayan as a fearless, impartial, sharp and deeply sensitive journalist who upheld the highest values of journalism.<\/p>\n

Highlighting contemporary challenges, Tarun Sridhar expressed concern over the declining standards of journalism. He said that sensitivity towards the common man is the need of the hour. In the era of social media, he noted, everyone with a mobile phone assumes the role of a journalist, which has diluted the essence and responsibility of the profession. While acknowledging that many journalists continue to work with integrity, he added that intense competition and the rush to present something new have significantly altered the nature of journalism.<\/p>\n

In her welcome address, Nirmala Katyayan, President of the Hemkant Memorial Trust, said that the Trust organises the annual \u201cAdaranjali\u201d event to honour eminent personalities from journalism, literature and fine arts, while preserving the values and legacy of late Hemkant Katyayan. Vice President of the Trust, senior journalist and litterateur Murari Sharma, highlighted Katyayan\u2019s multifaceted personality, stating that beyond journalism, he was a cultural activist deeply connected with folk life and society. He also authored six significant books on history and culture, enriching Himachal\u2019s literary and cultural heritage.<\/p>\n

Deputy Commissioner Apoorv Devgan said that Tarun Sridhar has always been a source of guidance and inspiration for young administrative officers. He added that Mandi has a vibrant and positive environment for literature and culture, with local organisations regularly hosting meaningful and high-quality cultural programmes.<\/p>\n

Sidharth Katyayan, the convenor of trust and son of late Hemkant Katyayan, also shared few memories of his father with the audience.<\/p>\n

The programme was enriched by colourful cultural performances. Students of Saraswati Vidya Mandir presented captivating performances, while artists of Sangeet Sadan enthralled the audience with classical and folk music. The Himachal Cultural Research Institute and Rangmandal Satohal presented a theatrical rendition of the folk tale \u201cMahathag\u201d, written by Hemkant Katyayan, which received widespread appreciation.<\/p>\n
