Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Friday led a massive anti-drug awareness walkathon in Bilaspur as part of the State-wide public movement against the menace of \u2018chitta\u2019, reiterating the government\u2019s resolve to make Himachal Pradesh drug-free. The town resonated with powerful slogans against drug abuse as people from all walks of life joined the campaign in large numbers.<\/p>\n

The walkathon, organised from Government Senior Secondary School (Boys) to Luhnu Ground, witnessed enthusiastic participation by students, public representatives, officers and prominent citizens. On the school premises, the Chief Minister administered a solemn oath to the participants, who pledged to collectively eliminate chitta and other narcotic substances from the State.<\/p>\n

Addressing a large gathering at Luhnu Ground, the Chief Minister described chitta as a \u201cslow poison\u201d that was destroying the future of the youth, breaking families and pushing them into social stigma. He said the State Government had launched a mass anti-drug movement from the historic Ridge Maidan in Shimla on November 15, followed by similar campaigns in Dharamshala and Hamirpur, with Bilaspur marking another strong milestone in the people-driven movement.<\/p>\n

Calling upon every section of society to join the fight against drug abuse, CM Sukhu laid special emphasis on the role of youth. He said that meaningful social change had always been led by young people and expressed confidence that the youth of Himachal Pradesh would once again stand shoulder to shoulder with the government to eradicate drugs from the State.<\/p>\n

The Chief Minister announced that the government would soon roll out an \u2018Anti-Chitta Volunteer Scheme\u2019. Under the initiative, college and university students, NCC and NSS cadets, members of youth clubs and socially conscious citizens would be trained as frontline volunteers to strengthen the anti-drug campaign at the grassroots level.<\/p>\n

Stressing that the government\u2019s efforts were not confined to slogans or symbolic events, CM Sukhu said strict action was being taken against drug traffickers, while victims of addiction were being supported through focused rehabilitation measures. He announced the release of Rs. 20 crore for a de-addiction and rehabilitation centre being developed at Kotla Barog in Sirmaur district.<\/p>\n

Sharing details of enforcement action, the Chief Minister said that during the State-wide \u2018Naka\u2019 campaign from November 17 to 19, as many as 208 checkpoints were set up and nearly 28,000 vehicles were checked. Several NDPS cases were registered, leading to 33 arrests. On November 22, simultaneous search operations at 124 locations resulted in nine NDPS cases and nine arrests. A special drive conducted on December 25 around educational institutions led to the registration of 12 cases and issuance of 385 challans.<\/p>\n

He further informed that the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs (PIT-NDPS) Act was being effectively invoked to detain habitual offenders. Action has so far been initiated against 66 criminals under PIT and NDPS provisions, including 19 notorious chitta traffickers detained on December 6 and 19.<\/p>\n

The Chief Minister said the government was also acting against illegal properties created using drug money. Of the 72 identified cases of encroachment and illegal construction, action has been completed in 14 cases, while proceedings in the remaining cases are underway.<\/p>\n

To curb illegal production and distribution of psychotropic substances, inspections of pharmaceutical manufacturing units are being carried out, he added. Community-based strategies are also being strengthened through meetings in 234 drug-affected panchayats to improve local intelligence, awareness and prevention.<\/p>\n

Town and Country Planning and Technical Education Minister Rajesh Dharmani, former Minister Ram Lal Thakur, former MLAs Tilak Raj and Bambar Thakur, Co-Convenor of the State Drug Abuse Prevention Board Sanjay Bhardwaj, Director General of Police Ashok Tiwari, Deputy Commissioner Rahul Kumar and Superintendent of Police Sandeep Dhawal were present on the occasion.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
