In a significant gesture aimed at strengthening the long-standing friendly and cordial relations between India and Bhutan, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Monday flagged off a vehicle carrying Chilgoza (pine nut) saplings as a gift to the Kingdom of Bhutan. The saplings were sent from the State Secretariat as part of a green initiative to deepen bilateral cooperation in forestry and environmental conservation.<\/p>\n

Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister said that India and Bhutan share warm, historic and amicable relations, and such environment-friendly initiatives would further reinforce the bond of friendship between the two nations. He noted that Himachal Pradesh and Bhutan have a similar Himalayan natural heritage, making cooperation in forest-based activities both meaningful and mutually beneficial.<\/p>\n

CM Sukhu informed that the Himachal Pradesh Forest Department would soon provide Chilgoza seeds worth Rs. 5 lakh to Bhutan. In addition, training would also be imparted to Bhutanese forest officials on scientific methods of Chilgoza cultivation and management. A team from Bhutan\u2019s Forest Department is expected to visit Himachal Pradesh shortly to receive this training.<\/p>\n

Highlighting the socio-economic importance of Chilgoza, the Chief Minister said that the state government would involve local women\u2019s groups in Chilgoza-based activities and extend financial assistance to them. He added that efforts related to Chilgoza cultivation and its overall development would be expanded in the coming years. He also recalled that earlier, 50 kilograms of Chilgoza seeds had already been supplied to Bhutan.<\/p>\n

Describing Chilgoza as a unique and highly valuable species of the western Himalayas, CM Sukhu said it is closely linked with environmental protection, biodiversity conservation and the livelihood of local communities.<\/p>\n

The Chief Minister further stated that the present state government is taking several effective steps to promote forest conservation and expand green cover. Due to sustained efforts, the forest area in Himachal Pradesh has increased by about 55 square kilometres. This year, plantation activities are being carried out on nearly 9,000 hectares of forest land under various schemes and projects, with around 60 percent of the plants being fruit-bearing species.<\/p>\n

To enhance green cover, plantation is also being undertaken on 600 hectares of barren hills under the Chief Minister Van Vistar Yojana. For better forest protection and management, 2,019 Van Mitras have been appointed since 2019. Schemes such as the Rajiv Gandhi Van Samvardhan Yojana and the Green Adoption Scheme are also being implemented to further increase forest cover in the state.<\/p>\n

Revenue Minister Jagat Singh Negi, Deputy Chief Whip Kewal Singh Pathania, Vice-Chairman of Himachal Pradesh State Forest Corporation Kehar Singh Khachi, MLAs Captain Ranjit Singh Rana and Malender Rajan, Chairman of the State Haj Committee Dildar Ali Bhatt, Advocate General Anup Rattan, Additional Chief Secretary K.K.
