In a major step to strengthen the fight against chitta and other psychotropic drugs, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced that Anti-Chitta Gram Sabhas will be organised in all Gram Panchayats of Himachal Pradesh on January 21 and 22, 2026<\/strong>. The Chief Minister was presiding over a meeting of senior officers here last evening.<\/p>\n

The Chief Minister said that these special Gram Sabhas would review information related to chitta and deliberate on key issues, including identification of chitta-related activities and rehabilitation of local youth addicted to drugs<\/strong>. Officers from various departments would attend these meetings as observers, while each Panchayat would undertake detailed mapping of chitta-related activities<\/strong> during the Gram Sabhas.<\/p>\n

He said that the state government had already launched statewide awareness campaigns<\/strong> to educate people about the harmful effects of chitta and other psychotropic substances, and these efforts would be further intensified at the grassroots level.<\/p>\n

As part of the awareness drive, the Chief Minister announced that Anti-Chitta Awareness Sports Tournaments<\/strong> would be organised across the state on the lines of the Premier League. These tournaments would include kabaddi, cricket and volleyball<\/strong> and would be conducted at the block, district and state levels<\/strong>. Winning teams would be awarded cash prizes by the Chief Minister<\/strong>, he added.<\/p>\n

Highlighting the government\u2019s firm resolve, Shri Sukhu said that a multi-pronged strategy<\/strong> was being adopted to break the chain of chitta trafficking and supply. Properties owned by chitta smugglers have been identified and would be demolished<\/strong>, he asserted.<\/p>\n

The Chief Minister also directed the Education Department<\/strong> to include a dedicated chapter on the harmful effects of chitta in school textbooks to create awareness among students from an early age. He further instructed that Gram Panchayat Pradhans and Panchayat Samiti members<\/strong> be included as special invitees in Panchayat-level drug de-addiction committees.<\/p>\n

To strengthen community participation, Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs)<\/strong> and women\u2019s self-help groups (Mahila Mandals)<\/strong> would also be actively involved in the anti-chitta campaign, the Chief Minister said.<\/p>\n

Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Minister Anirudh Singh<\/strong>, Principal Advisor to the Chief Minister Ram Subhag Singh<\/strong>, Chief Secretary Sanjay Gupta<\/strong>, Additional Chief Secretary K.K. Pant<\/strong>, Secretary to the Chief Minister Rakesh Kanwar<\/strong>, Secretary C.
