Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Monday directed the Forest Department to prepare a comprehensive and time-bound roadmap to increase the forest cover in Himachal Pradesh to 31 percent by the year 2030. He issued these directions while presiding over a review meeting of the Forest Department here today.<\/p>\n

The Chief Minister informed that the current forest cover in the State stands at 29.5 percent and emphasized that it must be enhanced through a well-planned, scientific and sustainable approach. Highlighting the growing challenge of global warming, he said its adverse impacts were clearly visible across the world, making environmental conservation a top priority for the present State Government.<\/p>\n

CM Sukhu pointed out that around 16,376 square kilometers of Himachal Pradesh comprises snow-covered, barren or mountainous terrain where plantation is not feasible. In view of this, he directed the Forest Department to identify potential plantation areas in each district and prepare a phased plantation plan accordingly. He stressed the importance of planting native species, fruit-bearing trees and plants with medicinal value to ensure ecological balance and long-term sustainability.<\/p>\n

Emphasizing a holistic approach, the Chief Minister said that efforts should not be limited to creating new forests alone, but must also focus on the protection and conservation of existing forest areas. He underlined the need for active participation of local communities in forest conservation initiatives.<\/p>\n

Referring to the \u2018Rajiv Gandhi Van Samvardhan Yojana\u2019, the Chief Minister said the scheme was launched to promote community participation in plantation and forest conservation across the State. Under the scheme, plantation activities were carried out over 924.9 hectares during the previous year with the involvement of 285 Mahila Mandals, 70 Yuvak Mandals, 59 Self Help Groups and 13 community-based organizations. He added that the State Government is providing financial assistance of Rs. 2.40 lakh for plantation over two hectares to participating groups, along with annual incentives linked to plantation survival rates. The scheme, he said, has received an encouraging response from the grassroots level.<\/p>\n

The Chief Minister further stated that a target has been set to undertake plantation over 5,000 hectares in the next financial year under the Rajiv Gandhi Van Samvardhan Yojana. Of this, 3,376 hectares have already been identified, while the process of identifying the remaining 1,624 hectares is currently underway. He also reviewed the progress of other ongoing schemes being implemented by the Forest Department.<\/p>\n

Additional Chief Secretary K.K. Pant, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (HoFF) Sanjay Sood and other senior officers of the Forest Department were present in the meeting.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
