After more than three years of constrained supply, preventive cholera vaccination campaigns have officially resumed, marking a major milestone in the global fight against one of the world\u2019s deadliest waterborne diseases. The first campaign under the restored preventive strategy has been launched in Mozambique, with similar initiatives planned in Bangladesh and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).<\/p>\n

The resumption follows sustained international efforts to increase global production of oral cholera vaccines (OCVs) amid soaring demand driven by worsening outbreaks worldwide. Health agencies, vaccine manufacturers, and global partners worked collaboratively to expand manufacturing capacity and streamline allocation systems to ensure that limited doses reach the communities at greatest risk.<\/p>\n

A Critical Shield Against Rising Cases<\/h4>\n

Cholera, an acute diarrhoeal infection caused by consuming contaminated food or water, can lead to severe dehydration and death within hours if untreated. The disease is most prevalent in areas lacking access to safe water and sanitation, particularly in regions affected by poverty, displacement, and conflict.<\/p>\n

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 600,000 cases of cholera or acute watery diarrhoea and nearly 7,600 related deaths were reported from 33 countries last year. However, health officials caution that these figures likely underestimate the true burden, as cholera remains significantly underreported in many countries.<\/p>\n

Since 2021, global cholera cases have increased year after year, reflecting deteriorating water and sanitation infrastructure, climate-related disruptions, and humanitarian crises. Although a decline in reported cases was observed in 2025, cholera-related deaths have continued to rise, underscoring persistent gaps in prevention, early detection, and treatment.<\/p>\n

Vaccine Strategy: Balancing Supply and Protection<\/h4>\n

The oral cholera vaccine is safe, effective, and recommended for individuals aged one year and older. A single dose provides short-term protection for at least six months and is particularly effective in controlling outbreaks. Two doses offer longer-term protection, lasting up to three years.<\/p>\n

Due to ongoing supply constraints, global health authorities will continue to prioritize a one-dose strategy for outbreak response to maximize coverage. The two-dose regimen will be considered selectively, depending on local epidemiological conditions and vaccine availability.<\/p>\n

The restoration of preventive vaccination campaigns offers a vital opportunity to protect vulnerable populations before outbreaks spiral out of control.<\/p>\n

\u201cCholera vaccination helps shield communities and buys critical time,\u201d said Dr. Ilesh Jani, Chair of the Steering Committee of the Global Task Force on Cholera Control (GTFCC). \u201cHowever, lasting progress will depend on long-term investment in infrastructure, for which political commitment is indispensable.\u201d<\/p>\n

Beyond Vaccines: The Long-Term Fight<\/h4>\n

While vaccines play a crucial role in emergency response and outbreak containment, health experts emphasize that immunization alone cannot eliminate cholera. Sustainable access to clean water, improved sanitation systems, hygiene promotion, disease surveillance, rapid treatment, and strong community engagement remain the cornerstones of prevention.<\/p>\n

Global health leaders stress that without substantial and sustained investment in water and sanitation infrastructure, cholera will continue to threaten vulnerable populations.<\/p>\n

The renewed availability of preventive vaccines represents a hopeful turning point.
