The initiative focuses on enhancing infrastructure, expanding advanced medical services and integrating cutting-edge technologies to ensure timely diagnosis and treatment.

A government spokesperson stated that delays in diagnosis and treatment often worsen health outcomes and significantly increase patient expenses. Studies indicate that late diagnosis can escalate treatment costs by 30 to 50 percent, highlighting the urgent need for improved healthcare infrastructure and prompt medical intervention.

Infrastructure and Technology Upgrade

Under the first component of the project, physical infrastructure in Government Medical Colleges will be strengthened through new construction, renovation and upgradation of academic blocks, outpatient departments and inpatient facilities. High-fidelity simulation centres, augmented and virtual reality-based training facilities, digital libraries and skill laboratories integrated with e-learning platforms will be established.

Advanced imaging and diagnostic equipment, including MRI and CT scanners, digital radiology systems and molecular diagnostic laboratories, will be installed. An Advanced Pediatric Care and Innovation Centre will also be established to enhance critical, surgical and tele-enabled pediatric healthcare delivery.

Modernizing Adarsh Swasthya Sansthans

The third component envisages upgrading Adarsh Swasthya Sansthans with modern diagnostic and surgical equipment such as CT scanners, mobile X-ray units, ultrasound machines, laparoscopic systems and ophthalmic surgical units. Telemedicine services and digital referral networks will be expanded to connect district hospitals with tertiary and super speciality centres seamlessly.

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu reiterated the State Government’s commitment to providing specialized and quality healthcare services. He said that robotic surgery facilities have already been introduced at Atal Institute of Medical Super Specialities and Dr. Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College, and similar facilities will soon be extended to other medical colleges. He added that the government plans to invest Rs 3,000 crore overall to equip health institutions with state-of-the-art medical equipment.

Reducing Out-of-State Medical Travel

According to health department data, approximately 9.5 lakh patients travel outside Himachal Pradesh annually for treatment, leading to an estimated economic loss of Rs 1,350 crore to the state’s GDP. Officials estimate that strengthening in-state healthcare facilities could save nearly Rs 550 crore annually, while also reducing the financial and emotional burden on patients and their families.

The comprehensive modernization initiative is expected to significantly enhance healthcare accessibility, improve patient outcomes and position Himachal Pradesh as a leader in technology-driven and equitable public healthcare delivery.

Himachal Approves Rs 1,617 Crore First-Phase Investment to Modernize Medical Colleges and Super Speciality Institutions.
