The Department-Related Parliamentary Standing Committee on Commerce held a high-level interaction with an eight-member delegation from the UK Parliament\u2019s Business and Trade Committee at the Parliament House Complex in New Delhi on Wednesday. The delegation was led by Liam Byrne, Chair of the UK committee, while the Indian side was represented by Dola Sen, Chairperson of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Commerce.<\/p>\n

During the meeting, both sides emphasized the strong and evolving relationship between India and the United Kingdom, which has developed from long-standing historical ties and institutional frameworks. The discussions highlighted shared values such as democracy, the rule of law, and mutual commitment to strengthening economic cooperation.<\/p>\n

A key point of discussion was the recently signed India\u2013UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) during the visit of Narendra Modi to the United Kingdom. The Indian parliamentary committee described the agreement as a historic step that is expected to significantly expand bilateral trade between the two countries. Members expressed confidence that the trade deal could potentially double the existing trade volume and open new opportunities for businesses in both nations.<\/p>\n

The committee also highlighted the growing economic partnership between the two countries. At present, India is the United Kingdom\u2019s 11th largest trading partner<\/strong>, while the UK ranks as India\u2019s 14th largest trading partner<\/strong>. The United Kingdom is also the sixth largest investor in India<\/strong>, reflecting strong investment ties.<\/p>\n

In addition, Indian companies have continued to increase their investment presence in the United Kingdom. During the financial year 2024\u201325<\/strong>, Indian firms invested in 106 projects<\/strong> in the UK and created 6,067 new jobs<\/strong>, maintaining India\u2019s position as the second-largest source of foreign direct investment (FDI)<\/strong> in the country after the United States.<\/p>\n

Speaking during the interaction, Dola Sen stressed the need for a level playing field for importers and exporters<\/strong>, noting that tariff structures are sometimes not favourable for Indian traders. She also underlined India\u2019s identity as an agrarian economy<\/strong>, stating that the country needs to strengthen traditional, labour-intensive, eco-friendly and agro-based industries<\/strong> for both domestic markets and exports.<\/p>\n

Sen further pointed out that with a population of nearly 1.5 billion people<\/strong>, India represents a vast market for UK exporters. She added that India remains an attractive destination for setting up industries due to the availability of labour, land and improving infrastructure. However, the committee emphasized that all investments must adhere strictly to Indian laws, labour standards and statutory regulations<\/strong> in accordance with the Constitution.<\/p>\n

Addressing the gathering, Liam Byrne described it as a privilege for the House of Commons delegation to visit the Indian Parliament. He noted that the recently signed trade agreement between India and the United Kingdom is one of the most significant free trade agreements in recent times<\/strong> and said both countries share a determination to ensure that the treaty benefits their citizens and contributes to shared prosperity.<\/p>\n

The meeting concluded on a positive note, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to continued dialogue, knowledge exchange and cooperation<\/strong> in trade and commerce.
