UK Government Announces Summer Cost-of-Living Boost with VAT Cuts and Free Bus Travel for Children.

London:

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has unveiled a package of family-focused measures aimed at making summer outings more affordable, including reductions in Value Added Tax (VAT) on a range of family experiences and free bus travel for children across England during August.

Announcing the initiative, Starmer said the government wants to help families spend more quality time together while easing the financial burden of school holidays. The measures are designed to encourage families to enjoy activities and attractions across the country without facing high costs.

Effective immediately, the government will reduce VAT on a variety of family-oriented experiences. The tax cut applies to cinema tickets, theatre performances, children’s meals at restaurants, as well as admissions to museums, zoos, and fairs. Officials say the move is intended to lower the cost of popular leisure activities and make them more accessible to households.

In addition to the tax relief, the Prime Minister announced that every child aged between five and 15 in England will be eligible to travel on local buses free of charge throughout the month of August. The initiative is expected to make family travel more affordable during the summer holidays and encourage greater use of public transport.

Highlighting the purpose of the measures, Starmer said the government is committed to helping more families enjoy days out and create lasting memories together during the summer break. He described the initiative as an investment in the “simple moments” that make a British summer special while providing meaningful financial support to households.

The package forms part of the government’s broader efforts to ease living costs for families and boost domestic tourism and local businesses by encouraging visits to entertainment venues, cultural attractions, and recreational destinations across England.

The government is expected to provide further details on the implementation of the VAT reductions and the free bus travel scheme in the coming weeks.
