Union Minister Inaugurates Digi Yatra Facility at Nine Airports, Expanding Seamless Travel.
New Delhi:
In a significant boost to digital travel infrastructure, Union Minister Ram Mohan Naidu inaugurated the Digi Yatra facility at nine airports, including Visakhapatnam International Airport, and virtually launched it at eight additional AAI airports. This expansion increases the total number of Digi Yatra-enabled airports to 24.
The newly launched facilities are at Bhubaneswar, Coimbatore, Dabolim (Goa), Indore, Bagdogra, Ranchi, Patna, Raipur, and Visakhapatnam. The Digi Yatra initiative aims to streamline passenger processing by reducing airport entry times from 15 seconds to just 5 seconds, thanks to its contactless and paperless system based on Facial Recognition Technology (FRT).
Since its initial rollout in December 2022 at New Delhi, Varanasi, and Bengaluru, over 55 lakh users have downloaded the Digi Yatra app, and more than 3 crore passengers have utilized the service.
Naidu highlighted the system’s role in enhancing security and convenience, emphasizing that the Digi Yatra system ensures robust data protection with no central storage of passengers’ Personally Identifiable Information (PII). Data is encrypted, stored on smartphones, and shared temporarily with the origin airport before being deleted within 24 hours of departure.
The Minister also pointed out the system’s contribution to sustainability, reducing paper usage across airports. Murlidhar Mohol, Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation, and Union Civil Aviation Secretary Vumlunmang Vualnam joined the event via video conferencing, alongside other senior officials from MoCA and AAI.
