Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the closing ceremony of the Golden Jubilee celebrations marking 50 years of statehood of Sikkim, highlighting the state’s progress and future potential.

Speaking at the event held at Paljor Stadium, the Prime Minister congratulated the people of Sikkim and praised their role in strengthening the nation. He described Sikkim as a unique blend of natural beauty, peace, and cultural richness, calling it the “heaven of the East.”

He emphasized that the celebrations reflected the spirit of unity in diversity, noting that cultural performances showcased traditions from across India. He said the event demonstrated a strong sense of national pride and collective identity.

Major Development Projects Announced

The Prime Minister inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for more than 30 development projects worth thousands of crores. These projects cover sectors such as:

Roads and transport connectivity

Tourism infrastructure

Healthcare and education

He highlighted key infrastructure initiatives including the Bagdogra-Gangtok expressway and the Sevok–Rangpo Railway Line, which will connect Sikkim to the national railway network for the first time.

Focus on Tourism and Organic Economy

Calling tourism a major pillar of Sikkim’s economy, the Prime Minister stressed the need for better infrastructure to increase visitor numbers. He also encouraged tourists to support local communities by purchasing regional products and experiencing local traditions.

He praised Sikkim for being India’s first fully organic state, stating that its model of sustainable agriculture serves as an example for the entire country. Products such as organic rice, cardamom, ginger, and kiwi are contributing significantly to the state’s economy.

Environment and Sustainability Efforts

The Prime Minister appreciated the strong environmental awareness among the people of Sikkim. He highlighted local initiatives promoting tree plantation and conservation, noting that such efforts position the state as a leader in sustainable living and clean energy.

Expansion of Healthcare Services

Highlighting progress in healthcare, he noted the growth of hospitals, wellness centers, and the benefits provided under schemes like Ayushman Bharat. He added that free healthcare coverage has been extended to senior citizens aged 70 and above.

Encouragement for Sports and Youth

The Prime Minister also spoke about the potential of Sikkim’s youth in sports such as football, boxing, and archery. Government initiatives and improved sports infrastructure are helping young athletes develop their skills and compete at higher levels.

Vision for the Future

Looking ahead, the Prime Minister called on the people of Sikkim to contribute to the vision of a developed India by 2047. He urged continued efforts to balance rapid development with environmental protection and cultural preservation.

He concluded by thanking the people for their warm welcome and reaffirmed his commitment to supporting Sikkim’s growth and prosperity.

The event marked an important milestone in Sikkim’s history, celebrating its achievements over the past five decades while setting a clear direction for future development.
