Italy PM Giorgia Meloni Condemns ‘Vile and Inhuman’ Attacks on Eugenia Roccella, Calls for End to Politics of Hate.

Rome:

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has strongly condemned what she described as “vile and inhuman” comments directed at Minister Eugenia Roccella, saying the attacks crossed the boundaries of legitimate political debate and reflected a dangerous culture of hatred.

In a public statement, Meloni said reading the comments targeting Roccella had made her “shiver,” stressing that there are limits that should never be crossed, especially when a person and their family are experiencing profound human suffering.

“There is a limit that should never be crossed, and that is the respect due to human suffering,” Meloni said. She argued that targeting an individual and their family during such a tragic moment moves beyond political confrontation and enters what she called “the field of moral misery.”

The Italian Prime Minister also warned that such incidents are the consequence of an increasingly “poisoned climate” in public discourse. According to Meloni, some political and public figures have, for too long, contributed to an environment that legitimizes hatred, dehumanization, and contempt toward opponents.

Meloni said the wave of hateful comments should outrage everyone, regardless of political affiliation, and called for an unequivocal rejection of abuse and personal attacks in public life.

Her remarks underscore growing concerns in Italy over the tone of political discourse and the spread of hostility on social media, with the Prime Minister urging greater respect, civility, and humanity even amid intense political disagreements.
