New Delhi:

Activist and educationist Sonam Wangchuk was shifted to a hospital on Saturday after his health condition deteriorated on the 21st day of his hunger strike at Jantar Mantar, Delhi Police said.

According to a statement issued by Delhi Police, the decision to move Wangchuk to a hospital was taken following directions from the Delhi High Court and expert medical advice. Police said that Wangchuk required immediate medical attention due to his worsening health condition.

“On the orders of the High Court and on expert medical advice due to the deteriorating health condition of Shri Sonam Wangchuk, he has been shifted to the hospital for essential medical care,” the police statement said.

The police said that while carrying out the process of shifting Wangchuk, some protesters attempted to obstruct the move, leading to a brief commotion at the protest site. However, the police claimed that they exercised restraint and completed the procedure safely.

“While complying with the orders of the Hon’ble High Court, the protestors tried to create obstruction, in which slight commotion ensued. However, the police took maximum restraint and undertook the exercise safely,” the statement added.

Delhi Police also appealed to the protesters gathered at Jantar Mantar to end their agitation and vacate the protest site peacefully.

“We request the protestors at Jantar Mantar to peacefully vacate the place at the earliest,” the police said.

Wangchuk had been observing a hunger strike at Jantar Mantar as part of a protest over issues concerning Ladakh, including demands related to constitutional safeguards, environmental protection, and greater representation for the Union Territory. His prolonged fast had raised concerns over his health, prompting medical intervention on Saturday.
