New Delhi:

WWF-India’s Programme Centre–Resource Partner (PC-RP), supported by the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, has launched a nationwide Green Diwali Campaign from October 20 to November 8, 2026, urging citizens to avoid firecrackers and celebrate an environmentally friendly Diwali.

The campaign aims to promote clean and green celebrations in line with Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment), encouraging people to adopt sustainable practices and reduce pollution during the festive season. It will reach schools, colleges, educational institutions, resident welfare associations and local communities, with a special focus on 130 cities covered under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP).

As part of the initiative, citizens are encouraged to take the Green Diwali Pledge, commit to avoiding firecrackers and motivate their family members, friends and neighbours to follow the same approach. The campaign also promotes the use of traditional diyas and energy-efficient lights, avoidance of single-use plastic, proper waste segregation and the purchase of locally made products.

Educational institutions and community organisations have been encouraged to organise pledge-taking activities during school assemblies, classroom sessions, rallies and community meetings to spread awareness about environmentally responsible celebrations.

The campaign also encourages citizens to participate in WWF-India’s Carbon Footprint Survey to understand how their daily activities and consumption patterns affect the environment. The survey aims to help individuals identify their environmental impact and adopt more sustainable habits.

The survey can be accessed at:

Schools, colleges, EIACP centres, community groups and individuals participating in the campaign have been requested to submit details of their activities through an online form available at:
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/15hDbjbqZzeo68kNjAxeHQA_SMIQ7lUlPdvCIi-gvwdY/viewform

Submissions should include the name and location of the institution or organisation, details and date of the activity, the number of participants who took the pledge, geo-tagged photographs and a brief report. Selected entries may be featured on EIACP websites and social media platforms.

Through the campaign, WWF-India aims to encourage collective participation in reducing pollution, conserving resources and making Diwali celebrations cleaner, greener and more sustainable.
