PM Modi to Inaugurate Pune Metro Pink Line, Lay Foundation Stone for Rs. 21,800 Crore Projects on November 3.
New Delhi:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate and lay the foundation stone of Pune Metro projects worth approximately Rs. 21,800 crore on November 3, 2026, marking a major step towards strengthening the city’s urban transportation infrastructure. The programme will be held through video conferencing at 12:30 PM, during which the Prime Minister will also address the gathering.
The major highlight of the programme will be the inauguration of Pune Metro Line 3, popularly known as the Pink Line, which has been developed at a cost of more than Rs. 8,300 crore. The approximately 23-kilometre-long corridor will connect Maan to the District Court Metro station, providing direct metro connectivity between Pune’s prominent Hinjewadi IT hub and Shivajinagar.
The new metro corridor is expected to significantly improve daily commuting for thousands of IT professionals, employees and other passengers travelling between these important locations. It will also strengthen connectivity with the existing Pune Metro network, enabling commuters to access different parts of the city more conveniently.
The Pink Line is expected to play an important role in reducing dependence on private vehicles, easing traffic congestion and lowering vehicular emissions. Improved access to major commercial and residential areas will further enhance urban mobility and provide commuters with a more efficient and reliable public transport option.
A distinctive feature of Pune Metro Line 3 is its emphasis on women’s empowerment and gender-inclusive public transportation. The entire line will be operated by women train operators, making it a first-of-its-kind initiative. The project also incorporates environmental sustainability measures, with approximately 30 per cent of its total electricity requirements expected to be met through solar power.
Foundation Stone of Pune Metro Phase-II
Along with inaugurating the Pink Line, the Prime Minister will lay the foundation stone of Pune Metro Phase-II, which will be developed at an estimated cost of around Rs. 13,500 crore. The second phase will comprise four corridors—Lines 2A, 2B, 4 and 4A—and will substantially expand the city’s metro network.
Under Phase-II, Metro Lines 2A and 2B will cover a combined length of approximately 12.75 kilometres. Line 2A will connect Vanaz to Chandani Chowk, while Line 2B will connect Ramwadi to Vitthalwadi, extending the existing east-west metro network.
Metro Line 4, spanning approximately 25.52 kilometres, will connect Kharadi to Khadakwasla. Another corridor, Line 4A, will cover 6.12 kilometres and connect Nal Stop to Manik Baug.
The proposed corridors will improve connectivity across several important residential, commercial and employment centres, including Kharadi, Magarpatta, Hadapsar, Swargate, Manik Baug, Nanded City, Pune Cantonment and Warje.
The eastern extension from Ramwadi to Vitthalwadi is expected to provide improved transport facilities to rapidly developing residential, commercial and IT hubs in Kharadi and Wagholi. These areas have witnessed significant urban and economic growth, increasing the demand for efficient public transportation.
Seamless Integration with Existing Transport Network
The new metro corridors will be integrated with the existing Pune Metro network as well as intercity bus services to provide commuters with a more comprehensive and convenient transportation system.
Interchange facilities at Swargate, Nal Stop and Kharadi Bypass will enable passengers to switch between different metro corridors and other transport services with greater ease. This integrated approach is expected to improve connectivity across the city and facilitate smoother movement between residential areas, commercial centres and major employment destinations.
The projects are expected to strengthen Pune’s public transportation infrastructure, reduce pressure on roads and provide residents with a modern, efficient and environmentally sustainable urban mobility network.
With an investment of Approximately Rs. 21,800 crore in the inauguration and expansion of metro infrastructure, the projects mark a significant milestone in Pune’s efforts to develop an integrated public transport system capable of meeting the city’s growing mobility requirements.
