A fireworks accident during the Anjootambalam Veererkavu Temple festival late Monday night has left 154 people injured, prompting police to detain two temple officials for questioning. Local authorities cited a significant breach of safety protocols, which contributed to the incident.

The injuries range from minor to serious, with one person in critical condition and eight others reported seriously hurt. A total of 97 injured individuals have been admitted to hospitals across Kasargod, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Mangalore.

District Superintendent of Police D. Shilpa emphasized that the temple authorities failed to comply with necessary safety regulations and did not secure permission for the fireworks display. In light of these findings, the police have initiated a comprehensive investigation into the incident.

Eyewitnesses described chaos as sparks from firecrackers ignited additional stored fireworks, causing a rapid escalation of the situation.

Local MLA M. Rajagopal expressed his condolences over the “very unfortunate” incident, noting that the fireworks involved were of low intensity. Kasargod MP Rajmohan Unnithan highlighted the severe lapses by officials responsible for ensuring safety during the festival, which was ongoing at the time of the accident.

Authorities have collected samples from the site for forensic analysis as they continue their investigation into the circumstances surrounding this tragic event.
