Vallabh Government College, Mandi Hosts Seminar on “Press for the Earth” to Mark National Journalism Day.

Vallabh Government College, Mandi, organized a thought-provoking one-day seminar on National Journalism Day, themed “Press for the Earth: Journalism in the Face of Environmental Crisis.” The event, held by the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, brought together prominent figures in journalism, academia, and student bodies to discuss the critical role of media in addressing environmental challenges.
The seminar was presided over by Prof. Ram Singh Atal, Acting Principal of the college, who emphasized the significant role of journalism in strengthening democracy. He noted that media personnel are integral to stabilizing and fortifying democratic processes, urging students to uphold the values enshrined in the Indian Constitution, particularly those of justice, liberty, and equality.
As part of the event, Prof. Atal, along with senior faculty members, launched a commemorative magazine prepared by the department. The magazine serves as a tribute to National Journalism Day and showcases the department’s ongoing commitment to journalism education and awareness.
Senior journalist Dipender Manta, a special guest at the seminar, delivered an insightful lecture on the challenges faced by journalists in maintaining objectivity and truth in their reporting. He discussed the intricacies of news creation, highlighting the importance of accuracy and responsibility in journalism. Sharing anecdotes from his own career, Manta inspired students to pursue journalism with integrity and a sense of social responsibility.

Flying Officer Dr. Chaman, Head of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, presented mementos to the chief guests and other distinguished personalities at the event.
In his address, Dr. Chaman stressed the need for fearless, unbiased, and truthful media, pointing out that facts are sacred, and journalism must remain free from personal opinions and views. He also reiterated that the role of journalism in today’s world is more critical than ever, particularly when it comes to addressing global environmental crises.
Assistant Professor Aditi Sharma, in her lecture on the significance of National Journalism Day, highlighted the dynamic and challenging nature of the journalism profession. She urged students to embrace both the creative and demanding aspects of the field.
The seminar also featured a PowerPoint presentation by students Monu, Yamini, and Poonam, who discussed the theme of environmental crisis and the role of journalism in raising awareness. The students presented a documentary on the growing environmental concerns and how media can help mobilize society for meaningful action.
A speech competition was also held, with Smridhi Sharma taking the first prize, followed by Ojasvi in second and Vijay Lakshmi in third. In the picture writing and poster-making competition, Bhumika won first place, Sonia secured second, and Ojasvi bagged the third prize. The competitions were judged by Assistant Professors Anuj Kumar, Jyoti Thakur, and Tenzin Chommu.

The event also featured cultural performances by students, adding a vibrant touch to the occasion. The seminar was skillfully hosted by Jagriti Thakur and Nancy Rana, both students of the department.
Professors from various departments, including Dr. Monica Panchani, Dr. Chaman Lal Kranti Singh, and Dr. Kavita, along with Assistant Professors Aditi Sharma, Anuj Kumar, and Jyoti Thakur, were present at the event. Hundreds of students from the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, along with NCC Air Wing and Army Wing cadets, attended the seminar, making it a memorable and impactful occasion.
The seminar was a significant milestone in the college’s efforts to foster critical discussions on the intersection of journalism, democracy, and the environment.
