Shimla:

In a significant move to enhance the state’s power supply and foster economic growth, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced the allocation of 22 new hydropower projects, with a combined capacity of 828 MW. These projects, which range from 6.5 MW to 400 MW, will be distributed across several key districts of Himachal Pradesh, including Kullu, Chamba, Kinnaur, Lahaul-Spiti, and Shimla.

The largest allocation involves nine projects totaling 595 MW, planned for the Chenab river basin. Additionally, the Sutlej river basin will receive eight projects with a combined capacity of 169 MW, while four projects (55 MW) are earmarked for the Ravi basin, and one 9 MW project will be assigned to the Beas basin.

For the first time, the state government will offer these projects to other states, union territories, and both central and state undertakings. The projects will be allocated on a 40-year lease, with an upfront premium of Rs. 10 lakh per megawatt. The Energy Directorate has already issued a letter to the secretaries of relevant states and central undertakings, and advertisements are being released to ensure extensive promotion and publicity.

CM Sukhu emphasized that these hydropower projects would not only secure a stable power supply for Himachal Pradesh but also generate substantial revenue through free electricity. Furthermore, the projects are expected to provide significant employment opportunities for local residents, promote development in surrounding areas, and position Himachal Pradesh as one of India’s most prosperous states.
