Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan Assumes Charge as 47th Vice Chief of Naval Staff.

Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan, AVSM, NM, today assumed charge as the 47th Vice Chief of the Naval Staff (VCNS), marking another distinguished milestone in his illustrious career with the Indian Navy. The ceremonial appointment was solemnly commemorated with the Vice Admiral paying homage to India’s fallen heroes by laying a wreath at the National War Memorial in New Delhi.
With a naval career spanning over 37 years, Vice Admiral Vatsayan brings to the position a wealth of operational experience, strategic insight, and leadership acumen. Commissioned into the Indian Navy on January 1, 1988, he is a specialist in Gunnery and Missile Systems and an alumnus of the 71st course of the National Defence Academy, Pune.
A Legacy of Sea Command and Strategic Leadership
Throughout his service, Vice Admiral Vatsayan has served onboard numerous frontline warships and has held several key sea commands. He was part of the commissioning crew of INS Mysore and INS Nishank, as well as the pre-commissioning crew of ICGS Sangram, reflecting his early involvement in India’s maritime modernization. He commanded several warships including INS Vibhuti, INS Nashak, INS Kuthar, and INS Sahyadri, the last of which he led as its commissioning Commanding Officer.
His leadership extended to pivotal strategic appointments. In February 2020, he assumed command of the Eastern Fleet during a crucial period marked by high operational tempo following tensions in Eastern Ladakh. Under his command, the fleet executed multiple operational deployments and international naval exercises.
A Scholar and Strategist
Vice Admiral Vatsayan is a graduate of premier military institutions, including the Defence Services Staff College (Wellington), the Naval War College (Goa), and the National Defence College (New Delhi). He has held critical staff roles in Naval Headquarters such as Director of Personnel (Policy) and Principal Director Naval Plans, contributing to long-term strategic planning and policy development.
Promoted to Flag Rank in 2018, he served as Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Policy and Plans), later leading the Eastern Naval Command as Chief of Staff in 2021. In that role, he played a vital part in enhancing operational readiness and infrastructure development on India’s eastern seaboard.
Championing Integration and Indigenisation
Before assuming charge as VCNS, Vice Admiral Vatsayan served in the Integrated Defence Staff (IDS), first as Deputy Chief of IDS – Operations, and then overseeing Policy, Plans and Force Development. In these roles, he was instrumental in advancing jointness among the three Services, streamlining force development, and pushing forward the national agenda of indigenisation in defence capability.
Family and Personal Life
Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan is married to Sarita, and the couple has two children. Their son, an Economics graduate, has earned an MBA from the Indian School of Business, while their daughter holds a degree in Humanities.
