BJP MLA Submits Memorandum to CM Sukhu Opposing Shift of Atal Medical University from Nerchowk.

Shimla:

BJP MLA from Balh, Inder Singh Gandhi, today submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, urging him to reconsider the state government’s decision to shift the Atal Medical and Research University from Nerchowk to Sarkaghat in Mandi district.

The move comes in the wake of CM Sukhu’s Independence Day announcement on August 15 in Sarkaghat, where he proposed relocating the university. The announcement triggered strong opposition from residents of the Balh constituency, who argue that Nerchowk already has the necessary infrastructure and ongoing development linked to the institution.

Ahead of the Chief Minister’s visit to Sri Lal Bahadur Shastri Government Medical College and Hospital, Nerchowk, BJP supporters led by MLA Gandhi and Zila Parishad Chairman Pal Verma staged a sit-in protest outside the college gate. Protesters raised slogans condemning the state government’s decision, calling it arbitrary and politically motivated.

During the official event, MLA Gandhi handed over the memorandum to CM Sukhu on the stage, firmly stating that Nerchowk is the most suitable location for the university. He warned that shifting it would stall regional development and deprive locals of educational and employment opportunities.

The issue has now escalated into a major political flashpoint in Mandi district. The BJP has accused the CM Sukhu-led government of acting without public consensus and vowed to intensify its agitation if the plan to relocate the university proceeds.

Locals have also pledged continued protests to safeguard their interests.
