IIT Mandi Secures Tata Trusts Grant for Groundbreaking Disaster Resilience Initiative in the Himalayas.
‘SAFER Hills’ project aims to revolutionize climate resilience and disaster preparedness in the Himalayan region through research, community empowerment, and sustainable innovation.
Shimla:
The Indian Institute of Technology Mandi (IIT Mandi) has announced a landmark partnership with Tata Trusts through a prestigious five-year grant aimed at tackling the pressing issue of climate-induced disasters in the fragile Himalayan ecosystem.

The initiative, titled “Tata Trusts Supported Augmented Facilities for Empowering Resilience in Himalayan Hills (SAFER Hills)”, is set to be implemented from August 2025 to July 2030 under the Centre for Climate Change and Disaster Management (C3DAR) at IIT Mandi. It marks a significant milestone in the collaborative efforts between academia and philanthropy to mitigate the devastating impacts of natural disasters such as landslides, floods, and earthquakes in the region.
A Vision for Resilient Himalayas
The SAFER Hills initiative is designed to build state-of-the-art research infrastructure, develop community-based disaster resilience strategies, and deploy sustainable technological solutions to improve early warning systems, disaster preparedness, and post-disaster response. This project stands as a beacon of innovation, focused not only on the Himalayas but offering scalable models for other vulnerable regions across India and beyond.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Laxmidhar Behera, Director of IIT Mandi, highlighted the critical importance of the project:
“The recent devastation caused by landslides and floods in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand is a stark reminder of the urgent need for resilient systems. With the generous support of Tata Trusts, we will advance cutting-edge research, strengthen community resilience, and build innovative solutions that safeguard both lives and livelihoods. This initiative stands as a model of how academia and philanthropy can collaborate to drive societal impact.”
Empowering Communities through Science and Innovation
The initiative places strong emphasis on the integration of scientific innovation with grassroots engagement. Prof. Varun Dutt, Dean of Resource Generation & Alumni Relations (DORA) at IIT Mandi, shared:
“We are deeply grateful to Tata Trusts for supporting the SAFER Hills initiative. This collaboration will enable IIT Mandi to advance research and deploy impactful solutions for landslide risk reduction and community resilience in the Himalayas. By combining scientific innovation with local engagement, we aim to create safer, more sustainable hill communities for generations to come.”
Dr. Kala V. Uday, Chairperson of C3DAR, elaborated on the project’s vision:
“At C3DAR, our mission is to merge advanced technologies with sustainable practices to build resilience. The SAFER Hills initiative will expand early warning systems, advance earthquake preparedness, and integrate community- and nature-based solutions, creating replicable models for vulnerable regions across the country.”
A Philanthropic Commitment to Climate Action
Siddharth Sharma, Chief Executive Officer of Tata Trusts, reaffirmed the organization’s long-standing commitment to climate resilience and institutional collaboration:
“The recent devastation in Mandi is a stark reminder of the risks this region continues to face, and of the resilience demanded of its people and ecosystems. At Tata Trusts, our commitment has always been to build institutions and partnerships that translate research and local knowledge into sustainable action. The collaboration with IIT Mandi under the SAFER Hills initiative reflects that belief—bringing together science, community insights, and institutional strength to create scalable solutions that safeguard those most exposed to climate extremes.”
A National and Global Impact
The Tata Trusts SAFER Hills grant underscores the potential of academia–philanthropy partnerships in shaping a safer, more resilient future. It also reinforces IIT Mandi’s role as a hub of high-impact research and societal engagement in line with India’s national climate adaptation goals and global sustainable development priorities.

On behalf of the Institute, the DORA Office and C3DAR extended heartfelt appreciation to Tata Trusts for their visionary support. They also acknowledged the instrumental efforts of the DORA team, C3DAR faculty, and the broader research ecosystem of IIT Mandi in making this collaboration possible.
With this transformative grant, IIT Mandi is poised to become a national leader in disaster risk reduction and resilience building, creating models that could shape the future of climate adaptation in mountainous regions across the world.
