India celebrated its 77th Republic Day on Monday with immense enthusiasm, patriotic fervour and national pride, as the iconic Kartavya Path witnessed a magnificent parade highlighting the country’s democratic strength, rich cultural heritage and growing security capabilities.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the Republic Day celebrations as a powerful reflection of India’s unity and progress. Sharing glimpses of the event, he said the grand parade at Kartavya Path symbolised the strength of India’s democracy, the richness of its traditions and the collective spirit that binds the nation together.

A key highlight of this year’s celebrations was the presence of distinguished international guests. India had the honour of hosting the President of the European Council, Mr António Costa, and the President of the European Commission, Ms Ursula von der Leyen, during the Republic Day event. The Prime Minister noted that their participation underscored the deepening India–European Union partnership and reaffirmed a shared commitment to democratic values, peace and cooperation. He added that the visit would give fresh momentum to collaboration between India and Europe across a wide range of sectors.

The Republic Day parade also showcased India’s formidable security apparatus. Advanced military hardware, disciplined marching contingents and impressive displays by the armed forces and security agencies reflected the nation’s preparedness, technological progress and unwavering resolve to safeguard its citizens. The Prime Minister lauded the strengthening capabilities of India’s security forces, calling them the pride of the nation.

Alongside military might, the parade celebrated India’s vibrant cultural diversity. Colourful tableaux and performances from across states and Union Territories unfolded a vivid cultural mosaic at Kartavya Path, highlighting the country’s rich and diverse heritage. The Prime Minister remarked that these performances beautifully captured the essence of India’s unity in diversity.

Earlier in the day, on the occasion of Republic Day 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid solemn tributes to the fallen heroes at the Rashtriya Samar Smarak in New Delhi. Honouring the brave soldiers who laid down their lives for the nation, he expressed gratitude for their supreme sacrifice.

In a series of posts on X, the Prime Minister said, “India celebrated Republic Day with great enthusiasm and pride. The magnificent parade at Kartavya Path showcased the strength of our democracy, the richness of our heritage and the unity that binds our nation together.”

The Prime Minister’s Office also shared a message on X, stating, “At the Rashtriya Samar Smarak, PM @narendramodi paid tributes to the brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives for our nation.”

The Republic Day celebrations this year stood as a powerful reminder of India’s journey as a sovereign, democratic republic—confident in its security, proud of its diversity and committed to strengthening global partnerships while staying rooted in its core values.
