Shimla:

Following a major landslide at Jahlma Nallah in Himachal Pradesh’s Lahaul-Spiti district, the district administration has been placed on high alert to ensure the swift restoration of road connectivity and uninterrupted movement of essential services.

Deputy Commissioner of Lahaul-Spiti and Chairperson of the District Disaster Management Authority, Kiran Bhadana, on Wednesday visited the affected site to assess the damage caused to the road infrastructure. During the inspection, she directed officials of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) to expedite restoration work and ensure that traffic movement is resumed at the earliest.

Speaking on the occasion, the Deputy Commissioner stated that the administration is taking the situation very seriously to minimize inconvenience to local residents, tourists, and emergency services affected by the road blockade. She emphasized that maintaining connectivity is crucial, especially at a time when the district is undergoing the Panchayat election process.

Bhadana noted that the timely movement of polling parties, election officials, and ballot boxes remains one of the administration’s top priorities. “All necessary efforts are being made to ensure that election-related activities are carried out smoothly and without delay despite the disruption caused by the landslide,” she said.

Officials of the Border Roads Organisation informed the Deputy Commissioner that restoration work is progressing on a war footing. Major Paras Kochar, Officer Commanding of BRO 94 RCC, said that efforts are underway to prepare an alternative route to facilitate the movement of small vehicles.

He further added that if weather conditions remain favorable, the road is expected to be reopened for light vehicles by Wednesday evening.

The Deputy Commissioner also stated that the district administration is maintaining constant coordination with the BRO and closely monitoring the evolving situation to ensure public safety and minimize hardships faced by commuters.
