UK Prime Minister Meets English Mayors to Accelerate Growth Agenda and Tackle Development Delays.

The UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer met with mayors from across England on Wednesday as part of the government’s renewed push to accelerate economic growth, boost infrastructure development, and remove barriers that have slowed major projects. The meeting, held under the framework of the Mayoral Council, highlighted the government’s commitment to working closely with regional leaders to deliver investment, jobs, housing, and improved public services for communities across the country.
The gathering comes as the government intensifies efforts to “get Britain building” by streamlining decision-making processes, devolving more powers to local authorities, and ensuring that development projects can be delivered more efficiently while maintaining accountability.
Addressing the council, the Prime Minister is expected to emphasize that local leaders will remain at the heart of the government’s growth strategy. He reaffirmed that the administration would continue collaborating with mayors through the powers granted under the recently enacted English Devolution and Community Empowerment Act, which seeks to give regional authorities greater control over economic development and infrastructure planning.
West Yorkshire Pushes Ahead with Mass Transit Vision
Among the key projects discussed was the proposed Mass Transit network for West Yorkshire, which regional leaders view as critical to unlocking economic potential and improving connectivity across the region.
Mayor of West Yorkshire, Tracy Brabin, welcomed the government’s support and highlighted the transformative impact the project could have on local communities.
“We have ambitious plans for our region, and a Mass Transit network is a key part of unlocking our untapped potential, boosting economic growth, and putting more money into people’s pockets,” Brabin said.
She noted that increased government backing and greater devolved powers would enable local leaders to deliver projects that directly address regional needs. According to Brabin, the new transport system would strengthen regional connections, stimulate business activity, and improve quality of life for residents for generations to come.
Major Regeneration Plans for the West Midlands
The meeting also showcased significant regeneration initiatives underway in the West Midlands. Mayor of the West Midlands, Richard Parker, highlighted progress on the ambitious Sports Quarter development, which is expected to become one of the country’s largest urban regeneration schemes.
Parker said the government had provided vital support through infrastructure investment surrounding the project. Work has already begun on the Eastside Metro Extension, a transport link designed to connect Birmingham city centre with the proposed new Birmingham City stadium.
“The Sports Quarter is one of the most ambitious regeneration schemes in the country, and this government has backed it with investment in the infrastructure around it,” Parker said.
He added that the development is projected to unlock approximately £3 billion in investment, create tens of thousands of jobs, and support the construction of thousands of new homes. Parker credited swift cooperation between regional authorities and the government for enabling the project to move forward rapidly.
To ensure efficient delivery, the project is being managed through a newly established mayoral development corporation, providing local leaders with greater powers and flexibility to oversee large-scale regeneration efforts.
Devolution at the Heart of Growth Strategy
The government views devolution as a central pillar of its economic agenda, arguing that local leaders are best positioned to identify opportunities and address challenges within their regions. By empowering mayors with greater authority over planning, transport, housing, and investment decisions, ministers hope to accelerate development and attract private-sector investment.
