APEDA Facilitates First-Ever Export of Fresh Jharkhand Mangoes to the United Kingdom.
1.5 Metric Tonnes of Women-Grown Amrapali Mangoes Reach UK Market, Opening New Export Opportunities for State Farmers.
Kolkata:
In a landmark achievement for Jharkhand’s horticulture sector, the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, has facilitated the first commercial export of fresh mangoes from the state to the United Kingdom. The consignment was formally flagged off in Kolkata on June 4, marking a significant step in integrating Jharkhand’s farmers with global agricultural markets.
The inaugural shipment consists of 1.5 metric tonnes of premium Amrapali mangoes sourced from Beura Farmer Producer Company Ltd., an all-women Farmer Producer Company (FPC) located in Bano Block of Simdega district. The mangoes are being exported to London by Kolkata-based exporter JGB Agrofresh Pvt. Ltd.
Women Farmers Lead Export Success
The export milestone highlights the growing role of women-led farmer organizations in India’s agricultural export ecosystem. Beura Farmer Producer Company, managed entirely by women farmers, successfully supplied export-quality mangoes for the international market, showcasing the potential of rural women entrepreneurs in contributing to India’s export growth.
The initiative has enabled the FPC’s members to directly participate in the export value chain, allowing them to secure significantly better prices for their produce compared to domestic market rates. The development is expected to improve rural incomes and encourage more farmers to adopt export-oriented cultivation practices.
APEDA’s Capacity-Building Initiative Bears Fruit
The export shipment is the direct outcome of an Export-Oriented Capacity Building Programme conducted by APEDA on May 5, 2026, in Simdega district. The programme was designed for Farmer Producer Companies (FPCs), Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs), and progressive farmers, focusing on export procedures, international quality standards, post-harvest management, and global market opportunities.
Following the training programme, APEDA facilitated a business linkage between Beura Farmer Producer Company Ltd. and JGB Agrofresh Pvt. Ltd. This collaboration enabled the procurement of export-grade Amrapali mangoes from local farmers and their shipment to international markets.
Boost for Jharkhand’s Horticulture Sector
Jharkhand’s favorable agro-climatic conditions make it well-suited for horticultural cultivation. The state’s Amrapali mangoes are known for their rich taste, attractive color, and excellent quality, making them increasingly popular in domestic and international markets.
With this first export consignment, Jharkhand joins the growing list of Indian states supplying fresh fruits to overseas destinations. Experts believe the success will encourage more farmer groups and producer organizations across the state to explore export opportunities and adopt internationally accepted production and quality standards.
Enhancing Farmer Income and Market Access
The initiative is expected to create long-term benefits for farmers by promoting:
Adoption of quality cultivation practices.
Improved post-harvest handling and packaging.
Compliance with international food safety standards.
Better market access and higher price realization.
Greater participation of women-led and tribal producer organizations in exports.
APEDA’s Role in Agricultural Export Promotion
APEDA continues to play a crucial role in strengthening India’s agricultural exports through market development initiatives, quality enhancement programmes, traceability systems, infrastructure support, and export promotion activities. The authority has been actively working to connect farmer collectives, including women-led and tribal organizations, with global markets.
The successful export of fresh Amrapali mangoes from Simdega to the United Kingdom represents a major milestone for Jharkhand’s agricultural sector and demonstrates how targeted capacity building and market linkages can help rural farmers access lucrative international markets.
The development is expected to pave the way for increased exports of horticultural products from Jharkhand, boosting farmer incomes and enhancing the state’s presence in global agricultural trade.
