Mandi Mayor Suman Thakur Assumes Office, Promises Inclusive Growth and Financial Revival.
Shimla:
Newly elected Mandi Municipal Corporation Mayor Suman Thakur and Deputy Mayor Jitender Sharma formally assumed office on Saturday after taking the oath administered by Additional Deputy Commissioner Priyanshu Khati. Speaking to mediapersons after the ceremony, Thakur pledged transparent governance, inclusive development and financial revival of the civic body.
Expressing gratitude to the people of Ward No. 9 for electing her for the fifth time, Thakur said the victory reflected the trust reposed in her leadership. She described herself as a “public servant” and assured residents that she would work with sincerity for the welfare and development of Mandi.
The Mayor said the Municipal Corporation would adopt a collective approach to strengthen civic infrastructure and improve public services, expressing confidence that Mandi could emerge as a prominent urban centre in the coming years.
Inviting public participation, she announced that the Mayor’s office would remain open to citizens, NGOs, youth organisations, women’s groups and other stakeholders. Over the next 15 days, consultations will be held with different sections of society to identify priorities and prepare a comprehensive development roadmap. She added that development plans would be finalised in consultation with councillors, MLAs, party leadership and residents, emphasising that “the priorities of the people will be my priorities.”
Addressing the Municipal Corporation’s financial challenges, Thakur said efforts would be made to secure financial assistance and development projects from the Central Government with support from party leaders and elected representatives. She also announced meetings with municipal officials to identify departmental gaps and improve functioning.
On staff shortages, the Mayor said the Corporation would first request the state government to fill vacant posts and, if required, consider recruitment through the House after obtaining necessary approvals. She also said a new Municipal Commissioner is expected to join within the next few days following the previous officer’s promotion and transfer.
