Israel Approves Ban on Imports Made with Forced Labour, Strengthens Human Rights and Fair Trade Commitment.

The Israeli government has approved a landmark proposal by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to ban the import of goods produced wholly or partly through forced labour, marking a significant step aimed at strengthening human rights protections, promoting fair trade and safeguarding the country’s economic interests.
The decision authorises the Minister of Economy and Industry to frame regulations prohibiting the import of products manufactured using forced labour in accordance with internationally accepted legal standards. The move aligns Israel with several leading economies that have adopted similar measures to prevent products linked to labour exploitation from entering their markets.
Under the decision, an inter-ministerial committee led by the National Economic Council in the Prime Minister’s Office will formulate a comprehensive implementation and enforcement framework. The committee has been directed to submit its recommendations for government approval within 90 days.
According to the government, the proposed mechanism will include the designation of a competent authority to identify and determine cases involving forced labour, the establishment of professional criteria for assessing products, a reporting and compliance system for importers, and an appeals process to ensure transparency, legal certainty and fair enforcement.
The Israeli government said the initiative reflects its commitment to combating human trafficking and forced labour while ensuring that the country’s supply chains adhere to internationally recognised ethical and legal standards.
Officials said the policy is expected to enhance Israel’s standing as a responsible trading partner in the global market by demonstrating its adherence to international human rights principles and fair trade practices.
Beyond its humanitarian significance, the government believes the measure will also deliver substantial economic benefits. By strengthening compliance with global trade standards, Israeli exporters are expected to improve their competitiveness in international markets and benefit from better trading conditions with key global partners. The move is also intended to reduce trade-related barriers that may affect Israeli businesses operating abroad.
The government noted that global consumers and trading partners are increasingly demanding greater transparency in supply chains, with many countries introducing regulations to prevent imports linked to forced labour and other forms of exploitation. Israel’s decision is expected to improve confidence among international investors and trading partners by reinforcing responsible sourcing practices.
The government emphasised that the new framework will balance effective enforcement with fair treatment of importers by providing clear guidelines, objective assessment criteria and opportunities for review and appeal.
Officials said the decision underscores Israel’s broader commitment to protecting human rights, promoting ethical commerce and ensuring that economic growth is built on principles of responsibility, transparency and fair competition. Once implemented, the regulations are expected to become an important component of Israel’s trade policy while strengthening the country’s credibility in global markets.
