Trump Announces ‘Economic D-Day’ Against Iran, Warns Countries Supporting Tehran of Severe Consequences.
Washington:
US President Donald J. Trump has announced what he described as the “most crushing economic operation ever taken against any country,” declaring a new phase of economic warfare and international isolation against Iran.
In a statement posted on his Truth Social platform, Trump said Iran had failed to take what he described as an opportunity to reach a deal with the United States. He said Washington would now pursue economic pressure on Tehran “on an unprecedented scale.”
Trump warned that the new campaign would not be limited to Iran. He said countries, financial institutions, businesses, airports and government entities providing what he called an economic “lifeline” to Tehran could face what he described as “tremendous economic consequences.”
Oil smuggling, financial networks targeted
Trump specifically called for an end to activities including oil smuggling, financial swap lines, cash transfers, exchange houses, ship registries and the use of front companies to support Iran.
The announcement signals an effort to target the channels through which Iran continues to access international trade and financial networks. The Trump administration has also indicated that the United States wants its allies and other countries to join the campaign to further isolate Tehran economically.
Trump described the campaign as an “Economic D-Day” and called on US allies to stand with Washington in isolating Iran. He argued that the measures would significantly weaken Tehran’s ability to project power and support what he described as terrorist activities worldwide.
Trump claims Iran’s military severely weakened
In his statement, Trump also claimed that Iran’s military capabilities had suffered extensive damage, asserting that its navy and air force had been destroyed and that military factories had been reduced to rubble.
He further claimed that Iran’s currency had become “worthless” and that the country was “hanging by a thread.” These statements were presented by Trump as justification for shifting the focus toward an intensified economic campaign.
Nuclear programme remains central issue
Trump reiterated his administration’s position that Iran must never be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon.
“IRAN WILL NEVER HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON,” Trump declared at the conclusion of his statement, making the nuclear issue a central part of his broader pressure campaign against Tehran.
The latest announcement comes amid a prolonged confrontation between Washington and Tehran, with diplomatic efforts reportedly stalled and tensions continuing over Iran’s nuclear programme and regional security.
Iranian officials have rejected Trump’s latest threats, with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi describing the move as a diversion from problems facing the United States. Tehran has also characterised the renewed pressure campaign as economic aggression.
Wider impact on global trade and energy markets
The threatened measures could have implications well beyond Iran if Washington moves to penalise foreign companies and governments that continue commercial or financial dealings with Tehran.
Markets have already reacted to the heightened geopolitical tensions. Oil prices moved higher following Trump’s announcement, reflecting concerns over potential disruptions to energy supplies and trade routes in the Middle East.
The announcement therefore marks a significant escalation in Washington’s economic pressure on Tehran, with the United States seeking broader international cooperation to cut Iran off from financial and commercial channels while maintaining its demand that Iran never acquire a nuclear weapon.
