Omar Abdullah Meets Amit Shah, Raises J&K Statehood and Key Governance Issues.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi and discussed a range of key issues concerning the Union Territory, with the restoration of statehood emerging as one of the principal matters on the agenda.
According to the Chief Minister’s Office, Abdullah raised the issue of restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood, along with the finalisation of the Transaction of Business Rules, rationalisation of reservations and other matters related to public welfare and development.
The meeting comes as the Omar Abdullah-led administration continues to press the Centre on restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. The issue has remained a major political demand of the elected government since the erstwhile state was reorganised as a Union Territory in 2019.
Abdullah also discussed the Transaction of Business Rules, which are significant for defining the allocation of administrative powers between the elected government and the Lieutenant Governor. The J&K administration has been seeking clarity and finalisation of the rules to facilitate smoother governance and reduce potential administrative overlaps.
Another issue discussed during the meeting was the rationalisation of reservations in Jammu and Kashmir. The matter has emerged as an important policy issue for the administration, with the government seeking to address concerns surrounding the existing reservation framework while balancing different social and regional interests.
Focus on public welfare and development
Beyond the political and administrative issues, Abdullah and Shah also discussed matters concerning public welfare and development in Jammu and Kashmir.
The Chief Minister said he also briefed the Union Home Minister about the upcoming First International Film Festival of Jammu and Kashmir (IFFJK), which is scheduled to begin in Srinagar on September 7. The festival is being positioned as an important cultural event aimed at showcasing Jammu and Kashmir’s artistic and creative potential.
Abdullah further expressed his appreciation to Shah for the Centre’s timely assistance following recent flood-related damage in several parts of Jammu and Kashmir.
The meeting therefore covered a combination of political, administrative, developmental and cultural issues, reflecting the J&K government’s ongoing engagement with the Union government on matters it considers important for governance and public welfare.
The restoration of statehood, in particular, continues to remain a central issue for the Abdullah government, which has repeatedly called for the return of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir following the 2019 reorganisation.
The discussions between Abdullah and Shah come at a time when the J&K administration is seeking greater clarity on its institutional framework while simultaneously focusing on development, welfare measures and the promotion of the region as a cultural and tourism destination.
