Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Inaugurates 243-Bedded Maternity Block at SMGS Hospital, Jammu.

Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah, today inaugurated a 243-bedded state-of-the-art maternity block at SMGS Hospital, Jammu, constructed at a cost of Rs. 31.59 crore, marking a significant step towards strengthening maternal and child healthcare services in the Union Territory.

The newly inaugurated facility is equipped with advanced critical care delivery services, a modern operation theatre complex, and other essential healthcare amenities aimed at ensuring safe and quality care for mothers and newborns. The maternity block is expected to ease the patient burden on existing hospital infrastructure and significantly enhance access to specialized maternal healthcare.

Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister said that the addition of the new maternity block would provide a major boost to public healthcare delivery, particularly in the field of maternal and child health. He reiterated the government’s commitment to upgrading healthcare infrastructure and ensuring accessible, affordable, and quality medical services for all sections of society.

The Chief Minister was accompanied by Health Minister Sakeena Itoo and Advisor to the Chief Minister, Nasir Sogami, along with senior officers of the Health Department and hospital administration. The dignitaries toured the facility and reviewed its wards, critical care units, and operation theatres.

Health Minister Sakeena Itoo said the new block would help improve institutional deliveries and emergency obstetric care, contributing to better maternal and neonatal health outcomes. Officials added that the facility has been developed in line with modern healthcare standards and will serve patients from Jammu and adjoining districts.

The inauguration of the maternity block at SMGS Hospital is being viewed as a key milestone in strengthening the public healthcare system and advancing maternal and child health services in Jammu and Kashmir.
